The Devil & The Angel On My Shoulders- Help
Hi All,
I am in a delemma and I do not know what to do. I am calling for advice. The devil is saying something in one ear and the angel is saying something else. I must sell one of my Benzes as we are moving and I need a 4X4 as an everyday car. I want to keep both but I cannot. Is there anyone here with these cars that can loosen my load of guilt. I love my 89 560 SEC with 173,000 perfectly maintained miles and I love my 80 450 SL with 63,000 perfectly original maintained miles. I have been restoring the body on the 450 (just minor nicks and dings) and I should be done in the spring. I took out all of the dents and painted the car from the doors back and I will do the doors to the front come spring. One must go as I cannot keep them both (I also have to rid myself of my 90 XJS convertible.) The 450 has a jump seat in the rear. I am having a panic attack deciding. Help please from my fellow Benz junkies. The 560 is more comfortable, stronger and uses super gas and the 450 is a hard/soft top, great cruiser, semi comfortable and uses regular gas. Thanks for any comments Jack |

Sell 'em all and let God sort it out!
Sorry, I couldn't resist. That's a hard one. Somehow, I suspect that it's easier to sell a 126 than the '80. Put them both for sale at what you consider a reasonable price (i.e., more than you'd pay for them) and see if one sells. |

They are both nice cars. Any sale will hurt feelings. Choose the one your less "connected" to and lose sleep over that one. It's hard to help with this kind of decision.
Btw, are you moving to a swamp? Why do you "need" a 4X4? If you do not mind me asking |

We are moving up northern New York State, lots of show, no real roads, valleys, peaks, woods, lots of holes on the roads to the home. I expect to be pulling cars so the 560sec & xjs conv. as my everydays might have to go as a trade for a 04 Jeep. |

No brainer.

Get rid of the XJS convertible. It's inferior to the Mercedes SL and the SEC. Now that was easy wasn't it? Thread closed.

Sell the SL.
The SEC's are harder to find than SL's. Personally, I would prefer a 560SL over a 450 (for the updated technology). Plus you can get decent money for a low mileage SL, and have cash left over to pamper your SEC. You will also have extra cash left over by selling the Jaguar

So what's the devil saying and what's the angel saying?

I do not conclude we will be privy to that nebulous,pathos-laden confab which smacks more of wishes postponed than practicality accepted, just my tuppence...
However I still maintain a good, used 4Matic {all wheel drive, you hooples}would be the way to go for any serious Mercedes enthusiast.

Unless you or another family member were the original owner from day 1 for either, I'd say keep the SEC. It's more unique, and you know it's been well taken care of.
There are a ton of garage queen SLs out there and if you ever have the need, one in prime condition could easily be obtained when funds and room allow again. Not so much with the SECs, most of which were abused.

Shy of that knowledge I would keep the SEC as others have so elegantly suggested though I would consider choosing it by pricing it out of the market in a free for all fire sale... set fire to the Jag and the SL and let the educated buyer sort it all out. I do wonder how a 4matic would fair for regular service pulling cars and on logging roads, if that's what he's gotten into. Wish I had one this past week though.

I need to sell one of the Me/be's on top of the XJS so there is no cash outlay for the 4x4.
