I would like to start a thread about computers.

Hello all.

For starters, I have been an AMD fan for ever. Now with the dawn of the Core 2, I had to shift for that extra power!

Post your specs!

Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 @ 3.4 Gigahertz.
Evga 680i
4 Gigabytes of PC2-6400 OCZ Titanium Memory
2x Evga Nvidia 8800GTX in SLI
Physx Card
3xWestern Digital 74 Gig 10000 RPM hard drives in Raid 5 SATA
2x 500Gig Seagate Barracudas SATA
Enermax 1000 Watt Power Supply
Thermaltake Armor
2x HP Lightscribe DVD Burners

Oh baby, shes fast..
Perfect 5.9 score on vista readyness!

Wow. You must have a lot of cash to burn.

I've got an AMD X2 3800+, Asus A8NE motherboard, 2 GB Corsair XMS memory, Nvidia 7900 GT, WD 250 gb HD, a cheapo CompUSA PSU i've been using for years, cheapo case, and a Compaq 21" monitor that doesnt have a whole lot of life left in it.

Ive had that setup for just about a year now.

My fastest computer is a 2xPII-400. The useful computers around here all belong to my employer.

15" MacBook Pro, pretty much original as when purchased about a year ago, aside from the increase in memory...

Intel Core Duo 1.83 GHz
2GB Memory
75 GB
ATI Radeon X1600 (128MB)
DVD/CD Burning

Plenty enough for me. Funny thing about Macs, they don't need bleeding edge, expensive stuff to ran the latest version of OS X. Bummer you can't say the same thing about Windows

My wife's got an old 12" iBook that suits her needs and I have an old Windows PC I use for testing junk in that crappy browser known as Internet Explorer.

I bought an old 1.6 GHz Pentium a few years ago to replace an Acer 100MHz (yes, 100MHz) PC. The only upgrade was the 120GB hard drive...I use it in my music studio, and y'all know how much space music files require!

For the most part, it's quick enough for my needs.

Decided to try my hand at building a machine...last year, I built two 3.2 GHz 512MB RAM PCs for the wife and daughter. More than enough for their needs, and suprisingly, a lot cheaper to execute than buying an off-the-shelf PC, even with the tweaks and custom options I opted for. Took a week each to build, set up load and configure, but well worth the effort!

I have this crappy Compaq right now, it crash's a lot and is four years old. I know nothing about computers, I think its got a 1.5G processor and 1G of memory, but I don't remember.

Soon as I get some extra cash I'm heading down to Compusa or Best Buy and getting whatever seems best for $1,500. I know very little about computers, I just want them to work!

Yeah thats what my friend says, maybe I will see if he wants to help me or something. Its just not something that interests me, because I know it will take hours to put together, and I can never seem to get these things to work right.

I rather just go down the the store, pick it up, put it together and if its broke its got a warranty. Less hassle, less time.

Computers are one thing that has never interested me.

Hehe..... First computer that I had was a real screeeamin machine .....well, back in the day anyway.

A Pentium, running at a mindnumbing 75mhz. 8MB of RAM, a 729MB hard drive, and a top of the line 14.4 modem. Yes sir, I was playing with power.

Then I got a divorce

Next machine was a 386DX40 (which was actually true 32 bit, unlike the 486SX's) and it too blessed me with 8MB of RAM, and eventually I blessed it with a 33.6 modem.
Then it was a PII running at 166Mhz/128megs of memory/1.6GB drive (I think) and a matrox vid card with 4MB of WRAM.
Coupla years later a PIII running at 500Mhz/384RAM/16MB vid card/4.5GB drive and ....cable (ooooooooh...aaaaaaah).

I was fine with that machine for quite sometime. Never had to worry about upgrading to meet the specs of a game (not that I bought many/any). That was until a few years ago, when I bought Morrowind, and discovered that the only requirement I met, was the min. for sys memory.

That is when I bought the machine I am using now.
2.19GHz/512MB RAM/128MB NVidia card/120GB drive

Haven't had any real trouble, except for a memory stick gone south - a new one was 35 bucks, so it was no biggie. Maybe this year I'll stick a couple of 512's in it, for a total of a Gig of memory. But so far it is meeting my needs nicely.
I've thought about getting a flat screen to replace my 19" CRT, but from what I hear the tubes give better color than the screens - and since this one still works nicely (MAG brand), I'll wait a little longer. Maybe once they have cheap 23"ers.

If you want reliability, I suggest getting ECC RAM. It makes a huge difference in system stability, especially when the computer gets to be a few years old. Servers will nearly always use ECC RAM, and ECC cache in the CPU.
