Chicago

I'll be in Chicago on the 16th of this month for a day, I'm heading out on the 17th. But anyway I may get some time to look around the city in between meetings, any sights to see?

Where are the good clubs and bars? I'm spending the night so I might as well check them out. Any good Jazz clubs? I'm kind of in the mood for Jazz.

I'm not sure in which part, the hotel hasn't been booked yet. Last minute I know but I'm not the one booking it, so as long as it gets done I don't mind. I'm flying into O'hare.

art museum, science and industry, field museum (natural history), planetarium, lincoln park zoo, brookfield zoo.

bennigans across from art museum is nice pub.

the artmuseum also has some really nice architectural displays including artifacts from demoed flw and louis sullivan buildings.

actually i have never really eaten anyplace downtown that was bad.

the architectural boat tour is good i hear but as yet have not done it. (kindof unbelievably actually)

across the street and a little south of the art museum is the architectural society's store which has books and frank lloyd wright and louis sullivan stuff among other things. and when i was there a week or so back there was a nifty display in the atrium of the building of flw tall building drawings and artifacts.

chicago is one of my favorite big cities.

My wife's jazz band isn't playing that night or I would have bought you a beer.

My sister lives in Chicago. I've yet to visit but I'm hoping to over the summer. I'm guessing from your posts that you and I are more alike than not in spite of the generational gap That said, my sister and I couldn't be more diametrically opposed so I'm not sure her advice on places to go in Chicago would jibe well.

I was born and raised in Chicago before recently moving to DFW. If you get a chance, you MUST eat at Charlie Trotter's, though it's probably too late to get a reservation (you should still try though). If you want to set your sights a little lower, check out Signature Room and the bar on the 95th floor of the Hancock building. You can hit the Rush and Oak Street areas for decent bars and meals. If you're into gritty places with history, try the Billy Goat Tavern. Also check out Gino's East for great deep-dish patty style pizza. If you can drive, go check out Bob Chinn's in Wheeling, the largest fresh seafood restaurant in the country - you might enjoy seeing the likes of Maybachs, Lambos, and Ferraris in the valet stand. Of course you're from the Eastern Seaboard, so fresh seafood might be passe to you...

Come to the diesel GTG I will be putting together for the spring, we could chew the fat over a beer.

I just want a nice Jazz club or bar, where I can go and talk shop with a couple people I will be meeting. Saturday will be busy so we need to go over stuff, and why not enjoy some good drinks and music while were at it?

Anyway thanks for the suggestions I will check out the links.

jazz club recommendation

I live downtown and can offer you an opinion. If you're only here for a day you kindof have limited options. Some of the posts would keep you here a week! For a pure Jazz club experience, the Green Mill is top of the list. BUT it's a 30 min L ride from downtown (north side, Lawrence redline stop) and it's a friday and will be crowded (its kinda small), smokey, and loud. Not conducive to business conversation but arguably the best Jazz club in the city.

There's also a big 'Latin Jazz' presence. Nacional27, Rumba, Green Dolphin are all cool; check metromix.

Of the mentioned items, if only here only a day, I'd second the motion for a visit to the 95th in the Hancock (875 N. Michigan). Tourists lineup like sheep and pay $10 for a ride to the Sears Tower observation deck but you can go to the cocktail area of the 95th, no charge, and stay as long as you like. If you wait around or are lucky you can get a cocktail table with incredible view. They sell views remember, not food, i.e. eat somewhere else.

After you know the hotel you can cross reference with metromix venue addresses.

I confirm the free trip to the 95th floor cocktail lounge in the Hancock Building, but add that you do it on a clear night. What a sight when the elevator door opens, and you walk around the lounge looking at the line of the city's lights against the black of the lake and the sky. Free ride, but drinks are $$.

Yeah I don't really care about the observation deck, I live just north of NY, so tall buildings yeah been their done that.

But a cocktail on the 95th floor sounds interesting.

we did that. it is truly impressive.

another time from the observation deck of the sears tower i stood in sunlight and watched a major storm roll in from the south. it was most impressive! kindof like the dust storm in hildago but slower and no dust.

Or two! Sounds like a plan.

Yeah, my sister is more into the Rockabilly/Speed Country scene, in fact her boyfriend is a lead singer. None of her hangouts would be very conducive to conducting business.

You ought to stretch that stay out another day or two!
