Being Bilingual Means...

... you have the chance to be doubly bad in grammar usage! I saw this on a car this morning:

"en dedo"

... which was right above...

"in toe"

At least the English version is a homophone!

I have no idea if he was, but "tow" and "toe" sure are.

I’ve found being multilingual to be a lot like owning a pick-up truck. It’s nice for you, but you’ll soon have “friends” wanting to “borrow” it.

That's silly, WVO. People don't really do that, do they?

Say, can I go for a ride in your helicopter . . . ?

Being bilingual means...

...means being able to cuss at my car in a language it can understand.

That's very true. Back in my big lawfirm days, I would routinely get requests from other attorneys to call home and speak with their Guatemalan (or whatever) nannies about some important matter.

I never understood how in the world these people could hire someone, with whom they could not fully communicate, to take care of their children.

The day our oldest was born, my wife quit working outside the home so that our children would not be raised by strangers.

We have never regretted our decision.

But you are right, people always seem ready to "borrow" my bilingual skills.
