I don't know about a monetary award. Earning his Eagle is definitely not about money, it's about self-motivation. Perhaps a question to ask yourself is how best to recognize your nephew's achievement that has helped develop self-reliance and mould leadership skills in generations of boys. Many of the top leaders in this country are former Eagle Scouts and many credit their Scouting experience for a major impact on their lives.

There was a Boy Scout commercial on TV some years ago in which a series of men, dressed in scouting uniforms, recited the Boy Scout Pledge. The series included John Glenn and Gerald Ford. Not a bad club for membership.

Such an achievement is not something that is rewarded with money.

I don't believe that I made it public knowledge at the time. It was personal satisfaction for me. I decided to do it one year prior to my 18th birthday.........after screwing around for six years. I earned 12 merit badges in the course of 12 months.........it was a heady time.........

I'm sure your nephew's desire to become an eagle scout was not due to his expectation of earning a monetary present from you.

I think a monetary gift is not such a bad idea.

Swiss Army Knife? Although somewhat handy it's also kinda cheesy. Get him something decent like a high quality Buck knife or other similar type blade. Or how about a decent rod and reel? A nicely engraved watch commemorating the acheivment would also be a great gift. A swiss army knife just wouldn't do it for me. Money would just be spent and forgotten. Give him something that he will have for years to come.
