Machine Shop Help

I attach a pic, with some notes, for a jig used with a bandsaw. The jig holds a wood arrow shaft and enables the user to make an accurate, repeatable cut. The results of the cut are a male piece, and a female piece. Basically, the idea is to splice two different pieces of wood together. My wood arrows usually break right behind the point (I have dozens of broken arrows). Splicing, and gluing a new piece on the leading end of the shaft can bring an arrow back to life, thus saving lots of time. I've tried cutting the shafts different ways, usually without much precision. This jig would solve my problems. I'm looking for someone who knows his way around a machine shop who would be willing to discuss making something like this for me.

Thanks. Mark,

I know of a few locals that'd do it.

How much are you willing to spend?

I'll call up my old boss and see if he'd let me use his shop for a couple of hours.

Can you make a better sketch? Shoot me an Email.

Sketch

Monomer,
Thanks for considering it. I have a better picture with higher resolution, but no real sketch. I can send it to you tomorrow night. The design is basic. Bar stock cut at a 6 degree angle, 23/64" hole down the center (I think you could mill out a groove on each half. Other than a couple of aligning studs and two holes drilled and tapped, that's it. I certainly don't mean to oversimplify this. I want it to be nice and useable forever. Oh, and I want my fellow primitive archers to say, "ooooh" and "ahhhh" when they see my fixed arrows. Thanks again.

Can you sketch a drawing from it? Even something as simple as an MS paint sketch would be better.

My boss used to (just about) give me all my prints on napkins.

My monitor is quite old, and it wont go as light as it should - I cant make out anything in that picture. I'll price the stock tomarrow after I get the sketch (if the place is open)

The shop's mill is only good to +/- .010, will that suffice (I can usually get .005 out of it; but I don't know if they abused it any further since I was laid off.

OK

image viewer likes it more...

Yes, I can do it; Just waiting for a reply on my e-mail I sent to the boss. That should be no more than $15ish in alumn (I don't know the going price of 6061) They may have a piece at the shop that maybe good - I could get it for cheap.

Only tough part is getting that 23/64th notch through the center, not really a big deal; though. (edit: an idea) How about a v-notch (at it's largest part no more than 23/64ths deep) through the center? This would accommodate both a little smaller arrows and bigger arrows.

PS - don't publish your private number on a public forum, you'll regret it.

Thanks

Thanks for the tip on the telephone number. I think I removed it. I thought about the notch idea too. All I care about is that it securely holds 23/64 and 11/32 wood shafts. Can you tell from my picture that the total angle is 12 degrees? Each half has a 6 degree angle. This makes for a lot of glue area and looks good. The actual width of the jig is really not important. What is important is that it slides square on the bandsaw table. Also, the aligning studs and screw down knobs (or bolts for that matter) keep both halves from sliding around. I'm glad you could see it on another viewer. Thanks for checking in to this so quickly for me. I couldn't send you a sketch, but would be happy to mail you a nice high res pic. Before you get too far into it, let me know what you believe is a fair price. I want us to both be happy.

We can negotiate a price after I find out what material costs and shop time equates to.

The higher res. photo would be nice. Do you want handles or SHCS joining the two halves? (I'll also have to source out the handles) I can also stamp your name/initials, if you'd like.

looks like $100 is the going price on a production jig - I'm sure it'll be FAR less than that
