Has anyone had additional weapons training?

Military people dont count unless it was outside training. I would like to take three defensive classes with this organization. http://www.azccw.com/courses.htm

All i have done is go out to the desert and shoot targets and crap that we take with. i would like to become
"skilled" with a pistol.

Has anyone taken these kind of classes? Were they worth it?
I was planning on taking them with my sa-xd .45 as this will be my primary weapon. Im still not 100% on wheather i wanna take the ccw test when i turn 21 or not.

Any input would be appreciated.

Also, does anyone have experience with smith&wessons m&p series?

I freind of mine has taken such a course, along with his wife. Both have ccw's. They did the course because they wanted ccw's but I can't honestly say if it is a substantial improvement over plain common sense. Having said that though I had to take a simlilar course when I lived in South Africa. Required by the Police before you could apply for a firearms permit. I won't say it wasn't worthwhile. I guess anything that improves your responsibility and facility towards firearms is a good thing.

I have a CCW here in AZ. The best CCW courses will cover weapon safety, will very thoroughly cover the legal issues involved (you can only use deadly force to counter deadly force) and will make sure that you can properly handle a gun and shoot accurately.

Unfortunately, there are quite a few courses that just barely cover the minimum requirements. It's advisable to ask around before signing up for one.

to become truly "skilled" with a firearm aside from some safety and cleaning skills,it mostly comes down to putting rounds out.IE shoot more to get better.pay attention to the small things you do.they will have the most affect.IE-Pulling trigger instead of squeezing will affect aim.
So,buy good ear protection, get a club membership and shoot several times a week.(everyday to become good-no less than 100 rds daily-more is better).
And w/o exception learn to service your firearm!

Can't you be serious for a minute? That's not a weapon. Not in YOUR hands anyhow . .

Um. I assume you meant wielding a whip Mistress? But I think I agree with Dee8go. In Mistress hands more an implement of pleasure than a weapon.

My input would be that at your age if your interests are learning how to fire a gun, you should have your head examined.

Go buy a basketball or if you really have the deisre to kill **** get a fishing rod.

Yes, you can really defend yourself with a basketball or a fishing rod.

Golly, that basketball statement sounds an awful lot like a similar comment on another thread. Maybe we need some new material....

Cheers,
Wes

Although I cannot tell you about my training, there are things you need an expert to teach you before you can become a crack shot.
With high powered rifles, and scopes, most people can put a hole in the target, but putting a hole in the kill zone at 900 meters is a little different.

With a hand gun/pistol there are techniques you can learn quickly from an instructor.

However you need to give the most attention to SAFETY.
Join a gun club, become very familiar with your weapon and keep it clean.

Follow through on any weapon training and certification. it will make you more responsible too.

Today is one of the saddest days to be talking about hand guns with the news about the university shootings.

If you like, I can pm you about gun handling if you are interested in becoming accurate.

He didn't ask for sarcasm from the anti-gun contingent.

He asked for information about weapons training.

Buy a good .22 automatic ( Ruger, HiStandard, etc), BRICKs of rimfire ammo and a book by Jordan or Applegate.

read the book, dry fire the gun using the hand techniques in the book. ( keep the ammo LOCKED AWAY!)
then shoot a few bricks being dilligent about style, grip, breath. gun clubs are almost required due to encroachment, but for me, I prefer it alone in the woods with a safe berm in front of me.

Here's a tip, mentally follow your shots home.

Handgunning is hardest for me. It does take continuous practice/muscle memory to stay good, whereas a rifle, well, I may have been born with one.

You can take a course, but you really need to shoot, shoot, shoot and then when you;re sick of it, shoot some more. Purposeful practice, not plinking or how fast you can pull the trigger.

Report back here.

Yo Austin85, good thing I fought so you can have your opinions and be free to express them. Its cool. My sons are starting with a a Ruger gov't model 10" auto pistol this year. Donovan is 6 and his older brother is 10 You think they need examined too? I dont believe in shrinks anyhow.

Shooting is actually fun as heck, not some macho bs thing. But, some wont ever "get it". I'm going to drill the boys until its intuitive for them. The 10 year old knows the various actions of sidearms and rifles already. Knows to clear a firearm before handling it. BASIC STUFF.

Yep.

Common sense for some, fear of the unknown for others.
