mostly snap-on, mac and craftsman. i do own about 30 of those hazet bmw and merc wrenches but those were free. i had about $7K but some nice young fellas releived me of about half of that amount when my truck, in which i was storing some of my tools, was broken into. i would say i have about 5 grand worth of tools.
i should look into a rider on the homeowners policy.

Most of the tools I use are my dads, but I have added a few. Their is probably a couple grand worth of Chraftsman stuff in the garage. I love Snap On but can't justify the price.

I've got approx. 20 boxes (23" - 15") and those I use all the time for work.

I suppose I better include and oxy/acetalene torches and related gear, too!

Then I have a few boxes for around the home for the wife to use when I'm on the road and not about for her amusement...

I better sit down during the coming few weeks and start (And finish!) an inventory (Thanks kmaysob!).

Mac wreches always hurt my hand after using them for a couple of hours.

You are not kidding about the Snap-On guys being asses. I never complain about the price they charge for whatever, but they always find a reason not to warranty tools. I'm talking about tools I bought new from Snap-Off, not worn out flea market crap. I quit buying from them years ago, after he refused to send off a working torque wrench for calibration, and told me my only option was to buy a new one.

I started buying tools when I was 15, and still have all the ones that didn't get lost under the hood of a car.

The best advice I ever heard was:

Probably around $200, I tend to rent (for free), not buy.. I've probably rented the same breaker bar 20 times from autozone... Love that tool rental program!

yea snapon warranty is a joke. one guy at work broke a pickle fork and they wouldnt warranty it because he hit it with a hammer(uh hello that how you use them) same guy broke his ratchet and they wanted $90 to repair it. another co-worker has bought 3 sets of easy outs because snapon wont warranty them.



dubyagee: the largest equipment we work on is 3800gal water trucks and 5yard wheel loaders. im trying to get into empire so i can get into the big stuff. its hard to get in to there.

Keep trying for Empire or the like. I was a marine mechanic prior to this job (assembled and designed specific racing engines) and I do not miss it.

I bought my tools starting at age 16. Then years later, I went to work at Boeing and went into debt for the required roll-away toolbox and their list of hand tools.

I would say that I do not use the vast majority of the size ranges. That applies to sockets, wrenches etc. I rarely if ever use any of my USA sizes, only metric. But that's just because I only work on my MB's. I have no interest in messing with the Chrysler minivan or the Toyota truck.

Tools are fun to buy, whether you really need them or not. I have more than a few of those.

Several people have mentioned theft. Here's a thought. A Boeing, that was a big problem. What we did was use an engraving tool to write our name and number on each piece. Back then it was probably SSN. Maybe phone no would be better today. Stolen tools are likely to be pawned and this might get them back.

We've got a great Snap On man in here in Leesburg, Virginia - Charlie Wheeler. I haven't had any warranty issues so I can't comment on that, but Charlie's been a big help more than once and I'm not even much of a customer.
