I've always seen them built on VW chassis with the 1600cc engines. Though others are on Pinto chassis with Ford motors...

The 540K in the first picture looks like it has a body by Saoutchik, a French custom body builder. They built bodies for a number of european cars of the era, including Delahaye, and Talbot Lago.

it's a Sindelfingen and is one of a kind IIRC .. built for WM Burden.. great grandson of Cornelius Vanderbuilt ( got that out of my book on the history of Mercedes)
