An old friend I used to hang with in Seattle -- he was a cracker-jack mandolin player and we used to busk on University Ave, (me on guit-box) not for the few bucks we'd get, more for the the fun and practice and gurls -- moved to St. Paul around '82, said he'd been there for a while before and that it had one of the friendliest environments he'd found for his type of music. A friend had hired him to run their stage.

Always thought I'd look to look him and the scene up . . . . not to mention I'd like to check it out in the wintertime, at least once. After listening to all that Prairie Home Companion. And I'm part Norwegian.

St. Paul has a lot more character than Mpls, imo. Historic, more ethnic flavor (Irish), eclectic, etc.

In regards to G. Keillor, he's kind of a dink. Helluva' an artist, but a genuine grouch.

A few years back, I was in St. Paul helping my friend get his AMC Rebel out of storage.

We got it out of the garage and let it sit in the alley, running with the choke on. As mentioned in another thread, it has glass packs, so is fairly loud at fast idle.

Keillor walks out his back door and tells us knock it off. We just looked at each other and laughed. I felt like a 12 year old getting yelled at by the old man down the block for making too much racket with my muffler-less Puch moped.

He sure appears in some sourpuss looking photos now and then. I've heard a bit about his mixed reputation up there. I mean, if the car with the loud pipes was a regular occurrence I could see an objection but once every now and then . . . .sheesh.

Laughing out loud like that was probably the ideal response. The guy is a wizard story teller, ain't he? About half of it is just spun on the spot I understand -- goes in with a rough outline and wings it. That's some serious tight rope walking.
