My dad and I drove one (I believe it was that model, it was definitely a mid 80s turbo diesel) to San Diego and back from Washington state and it was a sweet ride.

Never did any work on it, so my knowledge is way limited. My dad did and he liked the car all in all.

Mahindra and Tata use Pukegot diesels, their engine life as compared to the OM616/617's here is around 80,000km tops, consider that to the MB's 400,000 miles + with ease rating and you get the meaning.

Lots

Had several of them. Great suspension, easy to work on, the diesels last forever. In 1985 they made a 2.5 liter turbo that was pretty quick. I had 266,000 miles on it when I got ride of it and it used less than a quart of oil between changes, and it probably leaked that.

i had a mid eighties wagon with gas engine. parts availability sucks. having had a benz first really spoiled me for parts availability. i owned it a few months and sold it along....and was glad to not lose much money on it.

I used to have a 504 diesel.

Pretty good car. I drove it to Alaska and back.

I can even spel Peugeot.

Parts availability sucked, even back then when they had dealers. Gotta be almost impossible to get parts nowadays.

I saw one at the boneyard the other day but that would be small comfort if no new parts were available cause there's plenty you can't get at the boneyard.

I used to maintain several of them. Seemed like if you owned a Peugeot, and were a DIY guy, everyone with a Pug would find you, and you became their mechanic.

The only recurring problem I know of regarding the Peugeot diesels, is that annual retorqing of the cylinder head bolts should be considered as PM. Many of the Peugeot diesels ( and gassers, for that matter) used steel wet liners in cast iron blocks, and aluminum heads. Many different coefficients of expansion. Left unattended they head bolts will lose their grip, allowing the head gasket to leak. I never had one warp, though.
Loosen each bolt in sequence, check that the threads are clean, lube and reinstall. Peugeot had several different torquing methds, make sure you follow the one for your engine.
Whole job takes an hour, or less, and then you can drive for another year without worry.
