I would not support a war or a politician or a program because of what a politician told me in order to convince me of his Big Dream. Thus, I listened to Bush et al concerning Iraq and NONE of their reasons were good and sufficient to justify what we are involved in. Yet I supported the war then and I support it now (though particular strategies and particular tactics do give me pause).

Why?

Because for me, the war is indeed about oil, first and foremost. Yeah, Saddam was a brutal pig. Yeah, Saddam invaded various neighbors and robbed and raped and so forth on a massive scale. He oppressed those ethnicities he didn't like and unconscionably rewarded those whom he did like (his own clan & tribe, especially). All bad, many worthy of death, IMO.

Why oil?

Because 3/4 of the world's proven oil reserves are within a couple of day's march of an Iraqi Army and within a few minutes of the flight of a conventional or WMD-tipped missile and a couple of seconds of similarly equipped artillery. Saddam had clearly threatened to invade his neighbors in search of oil hegemony of the planet. Saddam recognized that control of M.E. oil gives control of the world. Clearly, he was a ruthless sociopath who literally would stop at NOTHING to gain his goals.

What would happen if Saddam had succeeded? He could have set arbitrary oil prices or shut-off oil to 3/4 of the world. Luxury car drivers would be pissed, but what about farmers?

Industrial farming feeds almost half of the 6 billion human beings on this planet. Modern industry and modern transportation is responsible for processing and shipping the products of industrial agriculture. Therefore, Saddam would have held in his hand the starve a couple billion people on this planet. I would not want a man who had amply demonstrated his capacity for inhuman depravity to have the lives of billions in his hands. War was not merely justified, it was the honorable and moral thing to do. Not because of Saddam, but because of his threat to the planet.

It should be obvious to anyone, or at least most mildly intelligent people, that going to war over oil is an oversimplistic term.
In the long term a steady supply of oil and a presence in the Middle East will be the outcome of all this. Were not building bases and embassy's in the middle of the desert for nothing.

we all know that you have a one track mind and no tolerance for objection on this subject so you can go ahead and think what you want. Only time will tell the truth. Flame suit on.

It does control the price. Greatly.

When there is instability in a region, there is a perceived ability to increase price due to said instability.

When you consider that the current admin. is deep rooted in that industry -- well, there you go.

To think that this war had nothing to do with oil is naive, to say the least. It was a three bird with one stone deal.

1) Support Israel, and thus set favor with the US media
2) Create oil prices of historical proportion
3) Create benefit for war-related (read defense contractors) industry.

If you think this "war" had 1/10 of 1% to do with securing the freedom of our great nation you're dreaming. If you think it had to do with "helping" the people of Iraq you're in a coma.

My grandfather has inside info that GB SR. and Cheney are running the show and Dubbya is just a puppet.
