whales make it!

the mom and baby whales lost up the river in california have apparently made it back to the ocean, swimming under the golden gate and out.

i read this and felt good. kindof like the feeling when my favorite team wins a tight game. although i did nothing but watch and root it feels like a personal victory somehow.

Good news. Funny how isolated stories like this can touch a nerve.

That is very cool that they made it back. How far did they go? 180 miles out of the way?

Reminds me of he time a 12-16 foot baby Gray whale cruised into Redondo Beach harbor some years ago and swam into the boat slip area where my lab's Boston whalers were. It figured it out that it was lost when it went into 12 feet of water.

Wink Whales making it?

(Oops -- I clicked on this thinking Mercedesshop was allowing whale porn. My bad.)

Why is it we like whales and porpoises so much, and why do they seem to like us? There are no verified accounts, as far as I know, of killer whales, the wolves of the sea, ever hunting and killing a human; and there are all those stories, possibly apocryphal, of dolphins helping injured swimmers.

In any case, they seem to like to play with us. How come, I wonder? Some racial memory of when their ancestors were land creatures? Envy? ("Gee, these lucky humans. They get to walk down their streets and watch movies like Terminator. Wish I could do that.")

Because they are mammals and we still see them in the same context as we view ichthes(fish) so any mammalian tendencies expressed by these things we view as fish gets kind of magnified and seems miraculous. (ie: nobody is impressed when a chimp shoots the bird at a zoo goer or wipes his butt, ect....)

there may be some truth in the above statement, but i am pretty sure you will find no examples of actual fish saving humans. and darned few examples of any other wild animals doing so.

polar bears for example have some really human like behaviors and even anatomical similarities but will hunt and eat a human.

dogs and horses are the exception of course they are now domesticated. i wonder if they did any things like the porposes before they were domesticated?

We drove by them last weekend going up the delta to Sacramento. There were a ton of spectators. I'm glad they made it, but I'd rather that now be local front page news.
