What kind of tree is this?

I want to say that I remember this tree the last time I was in Germany back in '91, but I am not 100% sure.
I am curious to know the name of this strange looking, yet graceful tree.

Pretty cool looking, isn't it?

Larry, I believe it's an Auricaria tree, a conifer native to Chile, IIRC. It is naturalized in Florida and California. Plantman has undoubtedly seen a gazillion in all stages of growth, so I defer to his identification.

What Bot said..

It is commonly known as a Monkey Puzzle tree. They grow to large sizes in the mountains of Chile like Bot said. They can get very old as well. In Vancouver, many were planted in the early 1900's. Cheers!

Native to Chile, eh? Well...looks like it can handle the mild winter in Germany too. Wouldn't mind having one, except I don't have a good place for it, and it's probably expensive.

Thanks!

Yes Larry, they are very pricey. They are very nice though...
The largest Monkey Puzzle outside of Chile is in California. It is on California's Big Tree Registry.

Hey Bot,
Are you sure it is a Auricaria tree? If so, where could i get one and would I be able to grow it in NC? Can I grow it indoors?
