Job search - questions, advice, and words of wisdom
I was wondering what is the professional thing to do when you apply to multiple places and the job you really want hasn't responded but some of the places that are more your second or third choice have called. Say you go for an interview and was offered the job. Do you accept knowing that (or hoping) there is still the possibility your primary place will call (for an interview or an offer if you have been interviewed)?
Also, when a place calls you, is it professional and considerate of them to ask for an interview later that day? I'd think the proper thing is to schedule one at least a day in advance, giving you some time to prepare. Is a same call/same day interview professional? And is it professional to say you can't do it on that day but can on another day? Sorta like making your own schedule, which I guess might come across as too prima donna. Or should I sound eager by accepting whatever day they suggest? |

Call back the first choice and show off how smoothly, politely, and proactively you put them on the spot to **** or get off the pot.

Scheduling an interview time will vary depending on the nature and size of the organization. Smaller companies, where the owner may be the HR Dept.,and the interviewer may have less flexibility in scheduling appointments than a larger concern with a full blown HR dept. I have always been flexible in scheduling appointments, considering the applicant's current work and location and my own availability. I don't think it's unreasonable to discuss a second option for an interview time if that day or the next is difficult or impossible for you to schedule. As far as interviewing at job choice 2 or 3 while waiting to hear from number 1, I see nothing improper in advising the interviewer that you are interviewing with a few other companies. He or she is interviewing other candidates too! You have passed the first cut. Your resume looks good enough for a face to face. Unless the job is to be a fireman and the siren's blaring or you are enlisting in the armed forces, a couple of days should not be a deal killer. My three thoughts: 1. No verbal pauses. ...llike,,,,,and,,,,umm....you know,,,like... ![]() 2. No Gum (I shouldn't have to say that, but it happens!) ![]() 3. Act enthusiastic....and you'll BE enthusiastic.
