A tourist in your own town?
As I was posting something under the "Happy Spot" thread, it ocurred to me how little we often take advantage of the fun things to do and see in our own home towns.
I live near Washington, DC and so there's no shortage of things to see and do here. I'm curious what some of you do or would do in your own home towns if you were a tourist there? I love the Smithsonian Museums, particularly the art museums, the Corcoran, the NGA, the National Portrait Gallery, the Renwick, the Philips Collection, etc. Never been to the Spy Museum, but plan to. The Air and Space Museum is outstanding. Where do you live and what do you consider worth a trip to see there?

We'll be in Reston, so it's very close. She's never been to DC and after the usual MALL suspects...Linc, Wash, Nat'l Gallery. Congress, Smithsonian, etc., where else would you suggest. Can you still do a visitors tour of the White House?

Been living in the D/FW area for a decade now and I've NEVER EVER been to a professional sporting event...not the Rangers, Cowboys, Mavericks, or Stars!!
I've never even been to Six Flags! All of these places are within a 1/2 hour drive (on the weekend) from the house!

I take my girls on a date every weekend I am home and we go to the local zoo, art museum, natural history museum, parks, ect.....while the rednecks all seem to fight to pile into Chuckie Cheese's or a putt putt golf place, ect....
My place in VA is smack in the middle of Yorktown, Williamsburg and Jamestown. I never miss the 4th of July Parade in Yorktown and take whoever wants to go to Colonial Williamsburg about every other year. Off years we will take the boat to Stratford Hall, Jamestown, ect....I wish I could have made the 400th Anniv. of Jamestown this year--my folks were there and it sounded pretty cool. Why not take advantage of it, I say.

Sometimes we'd just ride the subway for fun. I'd read the paper and we'd talk about the sights (whenever we came up out of the tunnel) as we rode around town. They used to have shows at the Kennedy center for children back than that were free. It costs a lot to live here, but you can entertain yourself for relatively little money if you put your mind to it.
