I wonder how much of this has to do with Virginia being a red state, i.e., thick headed and self-righteous.

too bad
Too bad the 80,000 petitioners didn't care enough *before* they were fleeced by the VA General ASSembly. Too late now.

I think VA still has an annual property tax assessment on cars. The newer the car, the more you pay every year. It seems that would discourage ownership of new cars.

Out-of-state resident drivers, and illegal alien drivers, are exempt from the Virginia Civil Remedial fees. This includes much of the military based in Virginia, and many of the students attending Virginia schools - they are exempt from these fees.
Also, in refering to the hypothetical legislator "John Doe", I meant to make no correlation with board members, living or dead. ![]() Such things as failure to "properly" signal a lane change, improper (worn out) tires, and so on, bring a $300 or so fee that is paid for three years (i.e. $900) I always thought NY or NJ was the "Kalifornia of the East" but am re-thinking that. ![]() Ken300D

So we have a business oppurtunity.
I will rent my address to VA residents to get an Il drivers License !!! Oh, but speaking of dumb Polititians and their laws. Here in Chicago, they are trying to set it up so that if you are caught driving w/o a license they will impound your car. (Suspended, revoked, none ...) Ok, that ain't a bad idea, but the impound lots have stated they will not be able to handle the 25k / year cars !!! AND (this I find really funny) They currently can impound your car for playing your stereo too loud !!!!

Remind me to stay away from Virginia.
Even Ohio is getting fairly reasonalbe. My #1 lovely daughter lives there and driving on the interstsate I can run about seven over with impunity, now. cmac.... I wouldn't be surprised if this type of thing makes it become a blue state....that is if the blue pols have enough sense to act wisely..... Tom W

If you look at the voting on HB 3202, which is available on-line at several sites, you can see that this form of fee collection greed passes across all party lines. To me, the message that should be sent is not "I'll vote for party 'x'" but instead, "I'll vote against the incumbent". That's because I'm not sure you can blame one party or the other for what happened.
Virginia already has "aggressive driving" laws that deal with sudden lane changes that force other drivers to adjust. But now, simply gliding over from one lane to another on the open interstate is subject to more than a $1000 overall ticket. More and more low income people end up driving on suspended licenses because they don't have the money to pay ticket and court costs. I think this new law will increase that situation, and may result in more violent traffic stops and car chases - due to the stakes being much higher for the driver. I used to live near Williamsburg and drove a highway often called the "Colonial Parkway". It's a nice scenic park drive between Jamestown, Williamsburg and Yorktown. Park police patrolled and enforced traffic laws. They had a policy - your first traffic stop ALWAYS resulted in a warning. I drove the road just about every day for five years, and I only needed that one warning (to slow down). ![]() Ken300D

If the $3550 fine were for poking along in the left lane, I'd be all for it. Too bad the simple "left lane is for passing" theory gets so little attention/enforcement. Sigh...
