Resale Time Share
Buy a resale to save a lot of money but be sure that it is "Fee Simple" (includes land).

I wouldn't call someone an idiot for buying a timeshare, but I think an awful lot of owners wish they hadn't bought. If you do decide to buy, do it on the secondary market and never from the resort. Check out resale prices on ebay - people are practically giving them away to get out from under high maintenance costs, esp. for St. Martin timeshares.

A friend of mine has one in Hawaii that he really enjoys and hasn't had any problems.

They have a lot of profit built in on the front end. I don't know this for a fact, but given all they use to entice their customers (yeah, I got roped into one of those excruciating sales pitches once), they have to have a tremendous mark up. So, the advice given above about buying a resale sounds good, sort of like buying used Benzs.
I know folks that have time shares and love them. If you always go on vacation and you always spend a decent chunk of change on them, then I think time shares make sense. For a lot of people, though, they seem more like health club memberships.

The one I bought in Paradise Island was a resale purchased from the owner via the resort.
Original price: $21,000 for 35 weeks. My price: $7,000 for 29 weeks. When you go to the resort to buy, there are usually owners who have multiple weeks that are looking to let some of them go at a much lower cost to you. I also bought when the Atlantis was first being built and all the other resorts were nervous and selling things cheaper. I wouldn't get into any timeshare that I had to make finance payments on.
