Nigerians looking for used tires

I put an ad for a $100 set of used tires on craigslist. Here's the first response -

"Hello, Thanks for your prompt reply, Well am okay with the condition of the item and the price, in fact i belive my husband will be okay with that, i will really apreciate if you can offer me the item because am really pleased with it, but my mode of payment will be back in check because is the only covenient means for me and Concerning the shipment my shipper will be at your place for the pick up after you receive the payment and so if possible may be i can check it up these week before i live and more also i will like to have the picture of the item in my mail box Please let me have the following so that the payment can be made to you .your Full Name to be on the Check your Full contact Address your Zip Code and your Mobile and Land Number so that the payment can be send to you. And like wise i will add your money altogether with the shipper fund in which you will help me send the excess fund to the shipper all because i will be out of the state for assignment and i want my shipper to ship the item to my new appartment next two weeks before am back. So once you get the check cash you will send the excess fund to the shiper so that they can come for the pick-up of the item in your destination. I will look forward to your reply as soon as possible. Your's Sincere"

Yeah. I have had a few of those replys on cars or things I have had for sale.

a quick hit of the delete button after reading a few words takes care of them!

Those Nigerians are trying to corner the used tire market...they've got millions in solvent capital to do so!

Amazing isn't it. What the hell do those guys do? Chain-drink espressos and hang out in computer bars all day? I think I'll retire in Nigeria since no one there seems to work either.

I played dumb with such a character recently. The check he sent me was a joke -- only a moron would try to cash it. What surprised me is that he gave me an Oregon address for his "shipper" who I was supposed to send the excess funds to. The check was written on a Wells Fargo account which has been closed (according to my banker) and I e-mailed her all the info about the Oregon address.

I seriously doubt they have the time or interest to go after these people.

It is the oldest form of con in the world. Play on the all too common greed of folks wanting to get something for nothing. Several good movies have been made through the years on the subject.

You can't cheat an honest man ... wc fields
the flim flam man ... george c scott
(something) paper? moon ... ryan oneal
the sting ... newman and redford

I got one of those. I was selling a bunch of car parts. "Buyer" didn't even want to haggle. Same thing, I send you a check for the amount and some and you send merchandise and surplus to this place. Well, I got a certified check via Fedex Overnight. I sent him an email telling him I got the check but it got wet. He sent another. Both checks from Nigeria. Sent him email and told him that the check was bad. In the meantime, I wasted his Fedex Overnight from Nigeria twice.

My guy was a complete moron. Said in one e-mail his secretary had already posted the check for the amount she thought he'd told her. $4,000 instead of $1,000 and will I just send him the excess minus my $1K price plus a couple of hundred for my trouble.

I say "I don't see a problem with that." Two weeks later, I get an e-mail saying that the check was received at my address, shipped by overnight UPS. He originally told me he was from Georgia. The e-mail name was Mark Collins. The check had a St. Paul address from a Coco Lee.

The guy was sending me e-mails every other day for a while saying "still waiting to hear from you." That reminds me, I'm going to e-mail him, apologizing for the delay, saying I shipped the moneygram out today.

That ought give him an adrenaline rush. Followed by the crash back to earth.

If you go to the FedEx website, you can "track" a package...even the one you have in your hands...

Just type in the tracking number and "TA-DA!" - the real address of, at least, where the package originated from, regardless what the sap tells you...

Overseas? From Nigeria? That would take a minimum of two days...

The "Nigerian" is from some place, stateside, that has a pickup of 6PM, at the latest...

Overnight is dang expensive, even for some "pube-nerd" thinking he's striking it rich...unless he's using mummy's and daddy's AMEX card!

You should have told him the package arrived torn open (like some machine mangled it) and the check was destroyed...have him send it a third time!

I tried selling a sub cabinet on Craigslist and had a reply worded almost exactly the same. If someone can't do the transaction in person, it's most likely a scam.

Now I do a google search on the email address before I reply to any potential buyer. If they are a scammer it usually comes up in an online list of people involved in the "Nigerian/Russian Dating Scam".

Does anyone know why it is called a dating scam? I'm probably missing a simple parallel.

I did track it and it was from somewheres in Nigeria. It was NOT from stateside. I might have been mistaken but I thought it was overnight. In any case, both were from Nigeria. I told him the package arrived soaked and the check was no good so he sent another. Same look and even same number. Surprise! Surprise!. After the 2nd check came, I told him I checked with the bank and the check was no good. If his partner wanted to send me another one, I would give it the old college try. He never sent another one.
