I worked for a company that used the first three letters of your last name and your first name intial to create an employee code - it was done by computer and had some rules for duplication. If your name was Jane Doe your code would be DOEJ - hence that became your nickname. But then there was this guy named Tom Cunningham-

My Great-Great Grandfather was named Peter Lipps and I wondered the same thing but I realized that this was in der Paterland and maybe it didn't have the same connotation in German.
