In-Ground Sprinkler Question
System has 6 zones. Zone 1 starts fine, but does not stop. Runs through all 6 zones, then everything shuts off EXCEPT zone 1. Found out when I came home after a few hours and the water was running all the way down the block. I had to go into the box and turn off the in-line shutoff valve.
What are we looking at here? Cheap & easy fix, or tough and expensive? It seems the valve that controls zone 1 is not shutting off? Any tips would be appreciated!

If it's just the electric solenoid triggered valve, it shouldn't be a big deal. I've found that having a schematic of the system, and a map of the location of the valves, wiring, switches and types of sprinkler heads is a handy thing to have.

Unfortunately I don't have a schematic, as we are the second owners. I'm guessing these solenoids are low voltage? Are the wires run in a conduit or something? Also, can I disassemble the valve and clean it? I'm almost certain it is stuck because we weren't allowed to water last year due to drought.

The valves run on 24V AC, which is an industry standard. Installations may not have the controller cable in conduits since they are usually rated for burial, but some installers love using PVC so much, the put the wires in them. Given the price, I think most just replace rather than repair.

Usually the valves have a manual over ride screw - it might have come loose. On many, you can buy the replacement diaphragm instead of a whole new valve - which would eliminate cutting, gluing, etc.
If there is a manual valve, open it while the pump is on. You should get water coming out of the hole that the plastic screw is in - sometimes removing it, flushes out debris that is causing it to malfunction. Once you screw it back in, the valve should close (unless you have that zone turned on).
