It's called MSHA. And BTW retreat mining is approved by MSHA even though it is listed as high risk.

But what will HAVE to happen is finger pointers must resign themselves to the FACT that the USA is MUCH more 'addicted' to coal than oil - doe.gov and gao.gov - you have to read some - I know, I know " .... but I like my preconceived notions more than true information..." Far greater than half of ALL the energy used in the US comes from coal. AND - ready for this? - driving a truck on ice, fishing off the Aleutian Islands and COAL MINING are all potentially deadly, there are no 'safe' ways to do any of them. A mine owner/manager's capability of public speaking does not make it anymore or less so.

It's just sad that so many are compelled to put their lives at such risk in order to make a living.

There are very few places where a man with an 8th grade education can make a predictable six figure salary and none of them are behind a desk. I, myself, seriously thought about a tour driving for KBR in Iraq. Over $100K tax free makes you think long and hard about the odds AND I have a college degree!

As bad as this mining tragedy is, you should look at the one currently developing in China; 172 miners trapped in a flooded mine.

I'm sure the only point in another hole now is PR.

My grandfather was a mine inspector back during the Great Depression. I remember seeing his miner's hard hat with the little carbide lamp on it sitting on a book shelf in his office.

I saw a clip of Murray testifying before the Senate just a few months back, I believe, Sen. Boxer was grilling him and the guy went ballistic, accusing her of parroting Miners' Union propaganda. The guy was sputtering with rage.

Coal has found a friend in the Bush admin.; the guy Stickler couldn't even get Senate Repo support, Bush appointed him backdoor-recess appt.

J. Steven Griles has finally been indicted for something -- he was a major coal lobbyist put in charge of Dept. of Int. leases.

And you're right, why is the Miners' Union not being heard on this topic?

Three guesses and the first two don't count....wonder if it would have been different if it happened in Texas.
