Childhoood Chores From Hell

O.K. who had what chore to do as a kid and what was your allowance for it?

1. Rake the leaves (freaking seagrape trees in Fla.) we had two too many.
2. Clean bathrooms

allowance $5.00 a week that my dad deposited into a bank book and I had to have a good reason for withdrawing it even though as I explained on numerous occassions "I worked my butt off for it and it's my money." today as a result I still am pretty good at saving.

It seems to me the only chore I really had to do was keeping my room clean and mowing the lawn. Of course the lawn was probably 3/4 of an acre. I think I got three or four bucks for that. I liked mowning the lawn, though. I mowed some of the neighbors' lawns, too, for extra money.

Nobody made me save my allowance. I just saved it because I liked accumulating money. Still do.

My grandmother's house had a coal furnace. Guess who had to manually fill the hopper and remove the ashes every damn day?

It's a SOB to have Black Lung in the sixth grade.

Cutting the lawn, with hay fever. That sucked. Found a construction job when I was 14. Made my sister ride the damn tractor. Worked in dirt and got some muscles. Still hate cutting the lawn. Would live on the woods if I could. No lawn.

Gather, feed and sometimes milk the cows. Clean out the resulting mess from the barns. Mow the 10 acre lawn. Fix any failed equipment when outside help wasn't necessary.

No allowance.

Okay, I think Matt is leading the pack for childhood-chore suffering so far. . . .

Grew up as a typical middle-class suburban kid (abeit military brat), so no "Walton-like" chores per se.

Did the yard, vacuumed and dusted the house, and washed and waxed cars...didn't accumulate any allowance for those jobs, but I honed each task to perfection in the manner the Japanese perfected the "metal folding" technique that allowed them to craft those incredible Samurai swords!

Today, friends and colleagues marvel at my masterful lawn efforts, spotless household, and of course, the ever-gleaming machines in the garage...

I had to feed the child they kept in the attic small animals. I always wondered why we didn`t have pets until I got older. For doing that, I got to live.

Me too. I still cut my parents' lawn though, as my dad is getting up there and they can't really afford to pay someone to do it.
