After reading the article about the effect of SL on marriages I decided to have a talk with my friend.

I am not going to go into all of that here. But he made an observation that was interesting. He has 2 SL avatars. One male and one female. Both are on the "free" account so, like you wrote, no money and no real guidance on how to do things.

Within a couple of days, male avatars were offering to help my friend's female avatar. The male avatars were very freindly and gave "her" free Linden dollars (the SL currency), offered "her" a free apartment to "stay," gave "her" free clothing, the works. All of that friend's female avatar had to "do" was be nice and friendly to these male avatars.

The male avatars also helped my fried's female avatar by teaching "her" how to move, how to do stuff, how to change clothing, etc.

On the other hand, his male avatar has pretty much languished and not be able to do much of anything. Like you found out: "no money = no fun" and "no money = no females."

Come to think about it, SL is a lot like real life!

Incidentally, my friend has agreed to see a doctor about his addiction. His wife is happy and so are his kids.
Sorry to heat that about your friend (The female part)

Unless he made a female account to get the money and know-how and then transfer them to his male account, I would be kind of alarmed if he enjoyed acting like a woman. Not making fun of him. Just a concerned observation

I guess Id have to admit I have an internet problem myself. Just not with an artificial world though. I used to spend hours on Offtopic.com. Its one of the best/biggest forums. I still go on there but limit my activity on there now. I used to stay up til like 5 am in college sometimes on there.

Its just something to do when all your friends are sleeping, doing something else, or working. I used to spend alot of time on the wmd (gun group of OT) section specifically. Kind of like hanging out with a second set of friends online. Also helped that they shared the same interests

That and WWII games online. That can be pretty addicting. I have an extremely aggressive and competitive side (I sometimes think thats testosterone coursing through my vains and not blood)
I too used to play til early in the morning.

Call of Duty series for PS2 and PC are my favs

Im friends with these 3 brothers. The oldest one is like 24 and the youngest is 19. The youngest one spends all of his money on his PC and plays WOW. We would be drinking or something and ask him to come down. Hed say hed rather play WOW. Really sad. Its pretty much ruined his life so far. Hopefully he will one day outgrow it or kick the habit
