Publicly JD had every right to say what he did, the perp was out of line before and JD got sniped defending himself and his families honor.

Had the perp been banned the jd would be a ghost, you would do the same if someone defamed you like that.

Luckily there are consequences beyond internet forums.

If you believe the forum is diminished by his absence, you should probably reconsider that, if not, then let it stand. He was temp banned once before as I recall and manned up nicely upon his return. That should count for something considering all the whiny "I was banned and it's no fair" folks running around here and elsewhere.

JD and Gotta can do whatever they want to eachother off the forum. But on the forum they cannot. I tried one last time to get them to take it off the forum, and both told me to shove it. So now they are gone. This was a long running fued, and well everything has to end at some point.

I give JD a lot of credit for that. He mans up and doesn't whine, and that certainly goes a very long way.

Here's my take, for what it's worth (I know, probably not much). I believe that a 30-day ban sends the same message as a permanent ban in regard to what will and will not be tolerated on the forum. But a permanent ban should be reserved for individuals you believe represent an overall detriment to the forum -- IOW, a circumstance in which you decide the forum is better off without him/her. I know you guys play it a little closer to the vest here, but that's I've always tried to look at it. As a member, I do believe this place in diminished by JD's absence -- just my opinion.

Thats more or less how we use the system. Banning really is a horrible way to moderate a forum, and I hate using it. The threat of a ban is far more effactive. The problem with banning is you don't really address the issue, you just ignore it. Also you can affect a forum for the good or bad with the use of them. A forum is very organic, and its hard to tell exactly how one will react to certain members getting banned.

Thats why I like the infraction system we use. Infractions give you lots of chances to correct, and we as mods can keep track. Because even though fractions expire they never go away. So if someone tries to abuse it, by say running them up, than letting them expire, than doing it again, we see that.

Its too bad some folks have to get too personal.

It just isn't worth the grief.
