One of the bigger gators in the 'hood caught Tuesday.

A a 10-foot two-inch long alligator weighing in at 488 pounds Saturday evening near Mississippi 43 on the Ross Barnett Reservoir.

The gator was missing two-feet of its tail which would have put the catch at over 500 pounds.

Was the piece of the tail missing before or after they caught it

Sounds like chicken fried gator to me!

It's my understanding the tail was lost before capture.

Maybe they can get a new one at a Retail store.

Does anybody have a good gumbo/gator recipe? I've had fried gator enough to want something different.

The E-Z method

Southern Gator Game Day Gumbo

Ingredients:

2 lbs finely chopped Mississippi Gator meat.
2 cans Campbell's Chicken and Rice Soup
4 washed and peeled carrots
3 cans of Cajun style Veg-All
2 tablespoons rosemary and garlic

Slice the fresh carrots. Combine all ingredients in a large pot, and simmer over medium low heat for 30 minutes. Baste with melted butter. If Cajun style Veg-All is not available, substitute 3 cups of canned or fresh vegetables plus Cajun seasoning to taste.

He did indeed forget to put his address on there, didn't he?

They actually sell Gator meat at Publix now...not sure if it is Florida, or Mississippi gator.

So if part of the tail is missing, does that mean a larger one is still swimming around?!

This was the first round of gator season this week. There was a 12 footer taken but weighed less than this one - but he had his entire tail.

The rules for gator hunting are interesting. You must have control of the animal before you are allowed to dispatch it. You can use fishing tackle, snares and rope. You can just ride around in a boat with a rifle. I guess that's why this is done in groups - one of the people pictured works in the same company with me.

The tail was probably bitten off by a bigger gator, maybe when this one was a lot smaller.

The rule about hauling gators in a truck is that you have to put ones together that are pretty closely matched in size. Otherwise the big ones will eat the smaller ones!
