Thoughts on '84 500SEL...

Sorry, don't have any pics. My cousin is looking at the car. Supposedly everything works well. AC is cold. No rust. Grey Market car. Paint is nice as is cloth interior. Needs nothing. 150K. Not 100% sure on maintenance. What in particular should he look out for? Guy is asking $6500. Seems a little much to me.

Seems a lot much to me. Does it have factory options not available in the US? Euro cars pack more power than US counterparts but a V6 Accord has the same appetite for highway.

You have to check gray market car mileage readings carefully. Typically they came in with odometers calibrated in kms which were replaced with new odometers calibrated in miles. Hopefully there is documentation allowing you to determine true total mileage. Otherwise you'd prefer to see a car imported earlier rather than later in life.

At this age condition matters more than anything else. Complete records would be nice and might offer reasons to go above market if they supported low miles and the car was in exceptional condition.

But cloth seats is a turn off for me.

2 to 3000 seems plenty enough to me.

I sold my 84 500SEc in good driver condition and running fine with icy air conditioning for about $5k....with the economy we have now and the price of gas I would probably struggle to get 4k for it now. A sedan is always worth a lot less than a two door.

Me too. He could be hammered a lot on the price, at least on the West Coast, where rust free examples abound.

For that price the car ought to be really really good, and with books and records going waaaaaaaaaay back. With the timing chain, tensioner and guide rail changed, and a receipt to prove it.

Have a look at the buyers guide; I co wrote that with the site owner back in1999, but it is as good as anything else out there, though the prices quoted are no longer relevant, as to the coupes (or sedans)
http://www.mbcoupes.com/buyersguide/buyersguide.htm

also, this one:

http://www.sec-shop.com/buyers_guide.htm

It mmight be a nice car, and the downward price trajectory may have reversed, and this is the first car that proves it.

RUN, RUN, RUN away from this car. Don't walk!

Take it from experience. This car could end up costing you a ton of money.

One of the most expensive systems to maintain in this vehicle is the hydropneumatic suspension. Since it is a grey market vehicle, it will have hydrostruts and nitrogen spheres on all 4 corners. It cost me over $700 just to replace 1 hydrostrut (think about if you hadda replace all 4!!!!!)

I would advise you to look for something else.

just my 2 cents, tho.

The four place hydropneumatic suspension was only available on the gray market EURO cars, true.

But it was an OPTION, and not too many cars had it.

But if this particular one did, you should run away. They were the devil's invention.

The car has been retrofitted with gas shocks.

For that kind of money, you can get a nice E420 (124). Have way better economy, accelleration, and handling. On the plus side, the 126 SEL's have enough room in the backseat for,...well,...for aaall kinds of things.

Whew!!!!

Ja, as Larry Delor said the back seat on the W126 is great. I stopped in Atlanta and slept in the back seat in a China-mart parking lot on my way from FL to MI. I couldn't believe how much room I had to stretch out my legs.

I agree... that price seems way to steep! And as a PO of one of these cars, upkeep can be very costly. If he does buy, like someone said, I would be 100% sure that the timing chains, tensioner, guides/rails have been changed recently and have a receipt of it. Also I would have the compression checked. Good luck!
