Nothing like a 4.6L huge displacement V8 that pushes a measly 224 HP to get the blood going.

It's due to the low 5 to 1 compression to allow it to be run on a single malt scotch on the rocks. :)

In the 55 and older communities there is one in every drive way, or a Buick or Caddy.:D

Its a nice car on the open road. Its a bummer that GM quit making the Caprice and Roadmaster competition. Mid 20s for hwy mileage, no worse than cars half their size.

Ahhh, the Roadmaster wagon with the woodgrain. You could haul more than a fullsize pickup. :)

A friend of my father owns a packaging machine manufacturing shop and does a lot of driving for sales, service and upgrading equipment. He puts well over 150K per year on since he drives everywhere. For the past decade he's bought 2yo off-lease Crown Vics. They're big enough to carry stuff with him, comfortable for long haul driving, mileage is pretty decent for a full-size car, they have enough power to do what he needs yet the engine is barely breathing hard. They just go. A couple dozen oil changes, a few sets of tires and a set or two of brakes later he unloads them with 300K +/- on the odometer before anything major goes wrong and moves onto the next one.

My across the street neighbor (who is in his 70's) has owned Grand Marquis as long as they've been making them. He has a '98 now but is seriously considering buying an '08 and just leaving it in his garage until it's time to retire his '96. He loves the full-framed RWD V8 and the platform's days are definitely numbered.

those grand marquis are actually really solid good cars. They are one of the few cars that i don't expect to be messed up when i drive them at the auctions. They arent the quickest things in the world, but can still do a decent donut or two, and arent really slouches, either. Plus, what other car do you feel like your floating on a sofa down the road in?

In Naples, Fla. they call those the "Q" Tip mobile. Because when an old person is driving one, they look like a Q-Tip from the back.

I had an 88' vic, and I did really like it. That thing could do donuts like theres no tomorrow. The dash boards are pretty boring though. Now if I could find a good Police Interceptor that hasn't been abused.....

These can be good because they have the heavy duty frames, alternators, batteries, cooling systems, transmission coolers, full size spare tires, dual exhausts and other heavy duty components.

Avoid the dog (K9) units, and regular patrol units ("Vomit Comets") that transported prisoners, and had a lot of idle time on the engines that won't show up on the odometers.

The smart money will go for the SAP ("Street Appearance Package") interceptors. Those are found painted in regular metallic and pastel colors, have normal hubcaps, chrome grilles, no spotlights or Go-Rhino pushbars or anything else that make them look different from a normal Crown Vic, but are still equipped as a full Police Interceptor.

SAP vehicles are often used by detectives, Lieutenants and Captains, and non-police agencies like water departments and DEQ agencies, and Federal Protective Agencies, like the secret service, FBI and US Marshall's service.

They have never been abused, driven in high speed chases, driven across medians or transported prisoners, had their engines idled for long periods of time, or driven in one shift after another.

They are rare, but can be found if you search long and hard. You can get an idea of prices by looking for CVPI cars on ebay and searching www.crownvic.net for information in their archives.

Failing to find a good interceptor, that was a SAP one, a retired Highway Patrol cruiser is a better deal than a regular patrol car, as it is less likely to be a 'Vomit comet" and to be damaged
and repaired.....

Traffic will part like the red sea for you on the highway in one, but if you have a white one with the pushbar and spotlights still on it (many are sold that way) don't be surprised if the REAL police profile you as a "Whacker" and harrass you.

The "Whackers" are molesters, psychos, police wannabes and other types who buy used Crown Vics cheap and drive them around pretending to be Police, and the real Police hate them, and give them no peace.

The used Police interceptors are bought cheap in wholsale lots by budget minded taxi companies who put them in service where they last 300,000 to 500,000 or more miles.

For reliable and very overall cheap transportation, they are hard to beat. I like the idea of them, especially a lightly used SAP interceptor with about 50,000 miles on it, a lot.
