...420s on crack. LOL!! I used to own an International 505. It positively had to be the most fun you could have on the water while wearing clothes. 505s are reportedly faster than a Flying Dutchman. Never could prove it but I do know that, on a windy day, it's definitely faster than most bass boats. While planing it downwind on my 35th birthday, I stuffed the bow into the back of a growler which all but stopped her dead in the water. That in turn inverted the spreaders all while putting my crew around the forestay and we wound up breaking the mast in two. We patched it up by sawing off the foot of the mast to replace the crushed section and then fished it with an insert made from part of a Capri 18 mast, rosette welded the thing in and filed it all smooth. We were back out flogging ourselves in a couple of weeks. Believe me, this is a tightassed evolution in a 505:

I dunno, but I seem to recall when Finian Maynard broke the all-out speed record for sail (48.7 on a sailboard) in '05 there was a Swiss or Finn that claimed they had hit 50 in some sort of tri-hull. Will look later.

I remember a Whitbread Sir Peter surfing his boat round The Horn surfing @ 45 knots I don't think going down a 100 ft wave counts as a speed record but that ****** haulin ass.

Thebault was the one I was thinking of. Apparently he hit a few clicks higher several times but they weren't certifiable.

The guy is a tad arrogant, no doubt about it. I've got mixed feelings about him. My change of heart comes from the realization that the sort of crew needed for old time rigged ships is not likely to be reliably available and would be cost prohibitive at any rate. Maybe the sort of programmed masts and sails that he's experimenting with will save a lot of fuel one day.

In her day, Barque Elissa (Aberdeen 1877, ~200'LOA, approx 12,000 sq/ft of sail) regularly sailed with just 11 seamen, 2 daymen and 3-4 officers.
