Years ago wife #1 and I rode a motorcycle up to DC for a weeks vacation. Got a hotel close in and close to a subway access and the m/c stayed parked in the hotel parking lot all week. They still charged $5/day for m/c parking.

The first time I went I flew (piloting a Cherokee Archer) into Washington National airport. That time I stayed with some friends and was not there long enough to do much site seeing. Highlight of that trip was leaving when I departed and could see the White House and all the monuments.

Thumbs up Getting to the Airport

Someone I know very well has been working tirelessly for many, many years (15 maybe, I don't know) to get the DC Metro line extended from Tysons Corner to Dulles Airport in NoVA.
Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project
It's very satisfying to see this project coming to fruition.

"Washington National" well, that puts some time framework on your visit.

There is a Days Inn in Alexandria that is at the end of the Yellow Line. If you stay there, the owners do not mind if you park your car and walk to the Metro which is 1/2 mile away.

This way avoids all parking troubles.

Let's just saw Carter was POTUS and leave it at that. We did have a good time.
