Old magazine reviews

Does anyone know where to locate old magazine reviews from magazines like motortrend and car and driver? I would like to see if they ever reviewed my 86 420 when it was new and see what they said about it.

Library

Go to your local library and look through the periodicals.

University or college libraries are best. In Wilmington, NC, UNCW has Car and Driver and Road and Tracks from the early seventies through the late nineties.

Cool stuff.

I am pretty sure I once read one for the 420SEL in Car and Driver or Road and Track, so there ARE some of them out there, especially in 3-car comparisons, such as with Jaguars and BMW 7ers.

Once you locate them, you can buy the old magazines off ebay and ebay.co.uk

I got a few that way.

There are not so many for the 420SELbecause it is a mid-line model and not really considered as "sexy" as the flagship 560SEL model.

I could poke around and see if I have anything, I think I might, possibly.

Wasn't the 420SEL reviewed in some C/D article from the point of view of people watching a new one being driven away by some successful stockbroker, as all the envious bystanders watched its trunk star disappear when he drove out of the downtown parking garage?

Check out Road & Track. They used to sell soft-cover books that contained road tests of certain makes over a particular segment of time.

Well if you want some for the 560/SEC/SEL, I certainly do have a few of those, and know where at least 2 or 3 of them are now. and could get down to a copy shop or something and send you some of them for sure. A couple are difficult to read though, but I had a decent selection of them once.

PM me your snail address if you wish, maybe I could do something for you.

Some magazine index their articles every year. I have had a subscription to Fine Woodworking for years and I know they index theirs. maybe Car and Driver does, too.

I tried to look for them on Car and Driver and Motortrend online with no luck. The Library seems plausible. I like to see old stuff like that especially because when my car was made and reviewed I was about two years old and lacked the necessary knowledge to read them.

I am pretty sure Road and track has a comprehensive index. If they tested one I probably have the magazine. Finding the exact one though may be a problem.

Check out ebay. I used to go on once a week and search for 420SEL. Every now and then a magazine like the ones you are looking for would pop up.

I found a May 1987 Autoweek with an article that compared the 420SEL to the BMW 735i and Jag XJ-6. PM me with your email and I will send you a scan of the article.

Well I went to the library last night. I havent found what I was looking for yet, but I did find an article on the 87 AMG Hammer wich is pretty interesting. 178MPH top speed is ridiculous. If anyone wants it I can email it to them as its too big to post.

Road and Track tested it @ 186mph there were tuned models that broke 200.
