SPL Competitions.
Aynone out there participate in any SPL competitions. I have a friend who wants to compete, and he needs my help to wire and build his stuff.
So, if any of you care to share any experiences, I would appreciate it... I need info on how and where to get started with this whole thing. I remember G-Benz saying he did something like this....

Long time back in Brooklyn, NY, bass is everything there so suggest you start with this and take it from there. The Pioneer sub is the biggest ever with a SPL record of 180dBa and can take 8000W of power.

The whole competition scene has changed dramatically since the days that I competed...I competed in the mid-80s, when the governing bodies changed from CAN to IASCA.
By the time the serious SPL competitions emerged, I was retiring from my modest stereo competition career...you need sponsorship or very deep pockets to be a national contender! Anyway, SPL competitions are very different from stereo competitions. For one thing, high SPL requires sound pressure. The vehicle has to be specially prepared for this. To achieve optimum sound pressure, you need the maximum number of woofers (and associated power) to cram in the vehicle, while having the least amount of volume available for the driver compartment. Only woofers are used, since tweeters and midrange speakers do no provide adequate sound pressure...remember this is not a sound quality competition! The vehicle has to have specially fastened windows and welded supports on the doors and other body structures. You want the chassis to be as rigid as possible. Body flex reduces SPL. Most vehicles you see in this competition are barely driveable. Everything in the vehicle is removed except for the woofer cabinets and power supplies, usually aft of the compartment. Even the dash is specially modified and welded...again, no flex. Needless to say, the extreme sound pressure levels will vibrate most head units into oblivion, so the unit is usually located somewhere in the rear of the vehicle, accessible from outside, or can be actuated via remote. Of course, anything above 120db will cause permanent ear damage, so it is NEVER a good idea to test the system while in the vehicle with no ear protection. For that matter, I wouldn't venture into anything capable of delivering 170+db even WITH ear protection!!! Hope this gives you some idea of what is required to be competitive. Google "SPL competitions" for more info. IASCA still has this category, but other organizations have created their own competitions as well.

Sounds silly to me. What's the point of producing really loud, crappy-sounding music?

Same reason people buy track ready 600bhp cars and are forced to drive on 60mph speed limit highways.

You hear good. Where to even begin a commentary on this topic in light of all the folks *****ing about having to work for a living and can't qualify for a mortgage, the govt. sucks, Jews got us all cornered and the sky is falling, ad nauseum? Put the toys down, quit trying to keep up with the Jonesettes you graduated with and man up and fight your way into wealth or you will never have it. Otherwise............well, enter stereo competitions and build your perfect woman with CAD. |

Here are some pics to give you an idea of the level of competition that goes on here.
This is the current record holder...the team is from Brazil, and I believe they managed an SPL of 179.4 at one competition!!! As you can tell, the structural reinforcements don't make for a visually appealing ride! Here are some pics of Alma Gates' entry, pretty much the "Michael Jordan" of the SPL scene. For years she raised the bar and took the sport to an art form..and her efforts are aesthetically pleasing to boot! This is her Bronco entry...heavily modified and revised nearly every year of competition... Needless to say, this is only what's visible to the onlookers when in competition...probably 30% of the drivers stuffed in the cabin!!! Even the driver's compartment is tastefully executed...even if you can't realistically drive this beast anywhere but on and off a trailer!!! I don't know how many amps or batteries are required to operate this system, but check out the alternator network in the engine compartment...astonishing!!!

So, can I mount some 20" rims on my pro audio sub boxes and enter them? I would imagine they would be a winner if the spl meter was place IN the enclosure.
What a waste of energy. |
