Another computer question.

A friend is running a Mac for his business an claims that he can only open e-mails sent via PDA. What does he need to receive my Yahoo Mail?

I've got a Mac and don't have a problem receiving email from Yahoo or send email to Yahoo.

Follow Ara T.'s lead -- does he have a browser? Safari comes with the Mac (it's what I'm using right now) and I haven't had a problem reading mail. Sometimes it takes-over and writes unfortunate things to people I don't know on certain web sites .....

I have a Mac, and don't have any problems at all, except that I don't know how to use all the programs that came on it...

Uh-oh. He has a gotcha-Mac. It's probably a G-3 running OS-X 10.2. I have one of those and it works just fine except for websites with lots of graphics, then you could watch bread rise faster.

He should still have a version of Safari on that old timer and even the older versions of Safari can access Yahoo. If he doesn't have OS-X and instead has Mac OS 9.0 ... he's screwed. Or if he has one of the even older computers like a Power PC 225 or something, he's even more screwed.

Tell him to go to the apple website and price-out the refurbished Macs. I've bought a couple of them and they work just fine and you save a few hunnert bucks buying refurbished. If he's willing to take a chance he can try eBay. I've bought 2 Macs through eBay and had good luck with both. Buy one with the Core Duo processor, at least 2 gigs of RAM and a 200 Gig drive and the latest version of OS-X.

He needs to budget a replacement computer once every 3 to 5 years. Not that dealing with buggy new software is never a problem, but trying to coax another year out of an old computer can be a huge time sink.

Older macs like that are notorious for not being compatible with The Internets™. Fortunately, Firefox works on OSX 10.2 and is far superior to ANY version of Safari before 3 (and is better in almost all regards to Safari 3 aside from HTML rendering speed which is typically not noticeable in any modern browser). It's very customizable too, you can get extensions like adblock to block any ads, Fasterfox to make it load HTML faster than Safari, and so forth.

^ OS X US English Firefox download.

If it is a G3 though, tell him that he needs to get with 21st century technology and buy one of those slick new iMacs.
