MB ABS saved me a lot of trouble today....

Raining like heck here and I was late for a lunch meeting. And a little pissed off. I was on the interstate and some guy was obviously moving (had a bowflex, bikes, ect.....) with a double axle 20' trailer with a fold up ramp towed behind a dually. The ramp was wire mesh, but had angle iron on it too like a lowboy does, presumably for traction to load some type of solid rubber tire warehouse equipment. No working trailer lights and the ramp obscured the tail lights of the truck. He was driving 50 in the left lane and I flashed him to no avail. Could not get around him and he got off on the same exit as I did. I was following too close to the trailer after I got off the interstate, knowing as I did that his tail lights were non existent and he was obviously a discourteous driver doing 50 in the fast lane on a 70mph interstate.

I could see the sign for the restaurant in front of me about 500 yards and was feeling relieved so I took my eye off the trailer for split second, only to come back to being pissed off and watching the trailer start to jacknife. I locked them up, steered the MB for I guess 30-40 feet in a slide and came to rest unscathed 1ft or less from the left corner of the now sideways trailer. He had rear ended a carload of four obese ethnic women who I could hear already wailing about Jesus from the open windows (42F today) of a mid '80s Nissan Maxima. I will say this--he tied his load down good.

Wouldn't have killed me or I doubt hurt me too bad, but I think I would have definitely hit him if I didn't have ABS--even with pumping (I grew up driving in snow before you Yankees chime in with that one). Good invention. Gonna stay in the rest of the day and .....pack for Florida

You didn't stop and recommend a good plaintiff's attorney for the obese ethnic woman.

Nice, glad you're ok. I'm still getting used to the ESP on my E430. Very handy feature in the snow. Cool technologies when you compare them to the old beasts of the 70s, like my Dad's old Cutlass. When it snowed and you had to stop fast, it was pump the brakes and pray!

Is ESP similar to the ASR feature my transmission has in the E300? I don't use it in the rain here because if you have new shoes and don't punch it, not really necessary. Would use it more in snow I am sure.

On my third as we speak....but to be truthful, it's Mount Gay Eclipse today. I quit keeping bourbon around the house a while back and had received the rum as an xmas gift. Ahhh.

Ever had any Pappy van Winkle's bourbon, JD? I've heard it's the best you can buy. 25 yrs old, it's one of the few aged bourbons around.

Nope, but I'm going on vacation Friday and will seek it out. This is weird, it happened to my MD FIL too, but I think I have developed an allergic reaction to bourbon so I quit keeping it around (because I love it to much to let it just sit there). For about a year now, after say my second one, my throat sort of swells up and my face and neck get flushed. I've eaten crab all my life too and have periodically had the same thing happen with that.

But f' it--when I am away I carry an Epi pen and slog on

You saved the benz but did you save your undies?

Glad you missed.

Long and sad experience with discourteous drivers leads me to exercise great caution around them. Heck, I hardly ever even honk at morons any more for fear of them chocking the brakes in front of me to look around to see why someone is honking.
