Cuckoo Clocks and Grandfather clocks

Yesterday I went to Disneyworld with Eagleco-94 and his Wife.. we stopped in Germany because I wanted to get a shirt... I was walking through the shops and was stopped by the selection of "cuckoo clocks".. Immediatly I asked the girl behind the desk " wie viele kostet es, bitte?"... she replied... "sechsehn hundert".. I replied.. wow

My grandfather has at least 10 german cuckoo clocks and two grandfather clocks(big ones).. I found one of the grandfather clocks online and right now its going for $5k... I would sit and watch the action on the clock for hours on end..

and then would get excited as the hour drew to a close so I could listen to the clocks chime... not to sound.. wrong or anything.. But I hope he leaves me his clock collection when he passes on... I love his clocks

Clocks rule! I love grandfather and other mechanical clocks especially if they have the real (not electronic) chimes.
I bought a cuckoo clock in Germany 3 years ago (yes, it was fairly pricy) and have several other older clocks around the house.

I love clocks too.

We have a grandfather clock and two cuckoo clocks.

Sometimes when I am working late at night, or just wasting time on-line, I can mark the passage of time by hearing the clock mark out the hours.

I also love the ritual of inserting the key wind the clock.

During the Northridge Earthquake (1994) the clock "walked" a few feet across the wooden floor. Fortunately, it was secured, so it could walk, but not fall.

If your grandfather wills you the clocks, it would be an awesome legacy!

Hope this pic comes out okay--This clock was brought to the states by the son of my moms neighbor who was in the service. Been ticking away since 1950. Some people do not like the noise, but it is theraputic for me. Let's see what you guys have out there.

My wife has a bunch of old clocks in Poland. There are also a dozen of the ceramic cookoo clocks.

Any idea what any of these are worth?

Can be seen at http://www.putfile.com/waybomb/images/174258

The star of the show is the weight-driven acid-etched glass"Vienna Regulator"worth about around $1,000.00.the others seem spring driven and as such will command substantially less, even the porcelain one, which while attractive and seemingly unusual were made in great quantities.

I have been an antiques dealer for near 30 years,as well as a Certified Master Horologist but I do reserve the right to be wrong..................

Thanks Carleton

I guess we'll leave them in Poland for her family and friends to enjoy. I'd like to bring one or two back because they really are nice, but the cost to do so is probably prohibitive, and I am guesing they have laws on exporting antiques.

I love old clocks too! Especially Seth Thomas regulator or gallery clocks from the late 1800's. I also like their mantle clocks with the complex chimes (124 movement) however in my house (in NY) nothing is level enough for them to run properly The mantles are all leaning due to 180 years of the house settling. I am hoping they run better in WV. Oh, and for kitsch I like 400 day anniversary clocks. In my mind there is nothing worse than an electric or God forbid, a quartz clock!

The Pocketwatches are, unfortunately of the "Sovietskaia"variety,I,E,1915-1930 and as such will not,in my opinion claim more than $50.00-$75.00 apiece.

By all means attempt to get the weight driven Vienna Regulator.I noticed some other antiques, including an oil painting. Kindly forward more pics of the same and I will be more than happy to give you my judgement on those items.

Hmm

No pics of the oil paintings.

I'll attempt to get my wife's cousin to take some pics.

Hey Carelton, I think I might be in New England for next Christmas... Might be time for some proper chaps to take an outing to our favorite friends house and write our names in the snow...perhaps even the wiring diagram for a Lambo's horn system

I do need to call my grandfather.. Its been two weeks since I've talked to him...

When I go to germany I hope to buy my own cuckoo clock and bier stein . Germany at epcot wanted like $1600 for a small clock.. My grandpa has at least three, large, complex, hand crafted, clocks then some others
