Amazing movie, saw it again last week. Movies these days are sucking the old ones are good. After watching F16's take off last week I am hooked. An F16 on full afterburner is amazingly loud, just amazing.

It was a kick @$$ movie. I've had a hard time watching anything with Tom Cruise in it anymore after he's gone off the deep end. He just makes me uncomfortable.

That movie was fun. The scene where they flew upside down above the mig was stupid though (where was the tails of the aircraft supposed to be?).

Kelly McGinnis was SO hot in it.

But - You have to quit calling them F16's.
The Navy flys (flew) F14's.
The Air Force has the F16's.

Yep - The top to top withthe Mig was the only real downer in the flick.

This was 5 or 6 years ago. Top Gun is my buddy's favorite movie too. His wife works at a high end home theater place. They have the Top Gun laser disc (pre HD days), a huge TV, $10,000 custom front speakers, dual subs..... you get the idea. They get it hooked up for the first time, so it is time to pop in Top Gun. Crank the tunes and watch the jets.

He kept hearing some rattles. He was afaid his new custom speakers had something loose inside. After some investigation he found he was rattling the outside porch lights... 8-). That is the way to watch it.

F-14 was a Navy Bird only. The Navy did/does not fly the F-16. (afaik)

My hubby is a former Top Gun RIO. He can pick that movie apart, but I still love it!

When we were dating, I lost the negatives to his TG pictures, but luckily with the help of Cathie, the TG secretary, I was able to get them again!

Yeah I know I can spot an F14 miles away they are very distintive. The base that I was working next to last week was flying F16's, and I saw one F15 take off. They retired the F14 last year, the new F22 and F35 are coming down the pipe so they needed to retire a few planes.

Whatever the plane was, one of the 'Russian' pilots mos prominently featured in the movie was a Duke grad, who's father worked for mine in the Fed. Govt. A couple of years after the movie was released, he was riding a bicycle on base with his 2 y.o. son in one of those old school yellow 'kid carriers' on the back. He hit a curb and went down, striking his head on the curb and permanently affecting his vision. His son was ok, but he was grounded and left the military soon thereafter.

Ironically, I blew the dust of that DVD and played it a couple of weeks ago. While I can't comment on the technical inaccuracies, I remember why we all wanted to enlist in the Navy after seeing the flick!

For what it's worth, the Navy does not fly F-16's operationally. They do have a few that they use as aggressors for the actual "Top Gun" school.

And as for the tailfin thing, while height of the fin would still be an obstacle, I always thought that we were supposed to believe that since the F-14 has two stabilizers, and the F-5 (which they were using to portray the fictional Mig 28 in the movie) has only one, that the F-14 would be able to "stradle" the single fin of the F-5. Also, the two planes are different lengths, so the F-14 stabilizers would likely be well behind the other. Although, that would have it's whole own set of controlability problems...

Regardless of the physical issues of the two aircraft.

There’s the issues of air displacement and air compression at that speed that would make cruising at that attitude in that close range pretty close to impossible for that length of time (if at all).
