Sorry we cannot serve you - You are Obese

Mississippi trying to pass bill that prohibits people who are obese from eating at certain restaurants (five or more seats).

Short version:
Title: AN ACT TO PROHIBIT CERTAIN FOOD ESTABLISHMENTS FROM SERVING FOOD TO ANY PERSON WHO IS OBESE, BASED ON CRITERIA PRESCRIBED BY THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH; TO DIRECT THE DEPARTMENT TO PREPARE WRITTEN MATERIALS THAT DESCRIBE AND EXPLAIN THE CRITERIA FOR DETERMINING WHETHER A PERSON IS OBESE AND TO PROVIDE THOSE MATERIALS TO THE FOOD ESTABLISHMENTS; TO DIRECT THE DEPARTMENT TO MONITOR THE FOOD ESTABLISHMENTS FOR COMPLIANCE WITH THE PROVISIONS OF THIS ACT; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

Long version:

FAT BILL

I guess that doesn’t surprise me.

The other night I saw a show on TV about the rates of heart attacks and obesity related health issues going through the roof in certain areas of our country. Mainly the southern gulf states (around you) where fried foods are pretty much the norm.
It really got into state health care costs.

I suppose if they can pass laws regarding where you can and can’t smoke. They can regulate where you can and can’t eat as well.

Not sure how they will set the lines though. Smoking – You either are, or you’re not.

How obese is too obese to eat at Joe’s Fried Fish and Slaw House, is anyone’s guess.

So with all the laws coming to save us from ourselves from things like second hand smoke, smoking, transfats, eating too much, etc... What do you do when a study like this comes along and shows that there is a thing that many people do that increases the risk of heart attack in people 326%; if you've already got heart issues the risk doubles. Should we outlaw this because it puts a strain on the health care system?

Well, considering that we asked for the govt to take care of our healthcare, they do have the right to insist we do things to cut down their cost.

maybe you meant "we asked for the govt to help with our healthcare" (i.e. universal health care), but even then, not all americans are asking for our govt to help with it.

that said, youre right that if they pay for it, they should be within their right to make it prohibitively expensive for those people who do not treat their bodies correctly. however, that gets back to the argument of benchmarking, compliance and enforcement. how messed up will that process be like?

..i can hear Cartman saying "I'm not fat, I'm just big boned!"

No but enough have asked for it that they developed Medicare, Medicaid, etc, etc.

Like the spook movie where the kids call for the devil to do their bidding. Now the devil comes back and wants his cut. We asked for help and now the govt is asking that we do this, that or the other to lower the risk. Seem familiar?

Should have NEVER asked the govt for help.

I'd like to say that's a good move, but I don't think the government should be in the business of protecting us from ourselves. If people want to eat, smoke, drink, etc, etc too much and ruin their health, that's their business. As long as it doesn't impinge upon my safety or freedom, it seems they should have the right to pursue whatever foolishness they want.

They are trying to bounce this bill like the bartender rules - you have to much to drink, step away from the bar.
I don't believe it has a chance of moving any further. But it sure is funny. There is a group of people who are really challenging this and of course the TV stations always pick the right person for the interview on air.

The bill says resturaunts with less than seating for 5 are exempt. I have a vision of my fried fish and burger joints with seating for 4 - but plenty of standing room, then I could move up to the W140 class of car.

If you can't feed people, don't put up an "ALL You Can Eat," buffet and expect birds to come and dine. We need to keep laws off of people's bodys.

You know, I think our southern states need to look at exercise. Southerners have always eaten high fat/high carb, the only difference now is they don't exercise much. Down there, few people can walk anywhere anymore. Up here we have bike trails, horse trails, jogging paths, etc, etc. I remember when I went on an exchange to Alabama I was so surprised that few people exercised and they had to drive everywhere, I mean so many places didn't even have sidewalks.
