Sailboat Q for Hatt. 2.4m Boats !!

DJ and I are thinking pretty seriously about getting into a pair of these as “lake toys”.

We just think they look like a hell of a lot of fun. We wouldn’t get into serious racing with them. (We have three Laser II's for that.)
Just sparing one another and chasing each other around.

Any experience with them?

Thoughts?

Oh yeah those things are cool! Their is a fleet of them that sails around here.

I don't know much about them, I have never sailed one. But they seem to have a pretty simple rig, almost like sailing an RC sloop. Supposidly they are good for training, one of the best sailors I know sails one on the off season.

If you are looking for a sailboat thats a bit more challanging and you want to learn how to really race sail Star's.

We are looking at them as fun. I can certainly see a face full of water.

The Stars look like a lot of fun. Have not sailed one, but have seen a few at local regattas. Certainly a two crew boat (in good winds, anyway).

That’s why we have/love the Laser IIs. They can be crewed by two or solo. Though when solo, we leave the spinnaker off the boat. The spinnaker tube is sweet, but still a handful when solo. DJ loves the solo trap on the Laser II. I’m happy in the straps. I run them loose enough to get my upper legs off the deck for an “out there” feel in good wind. DJ usually will wear about 10lbs of wrist weights and can work it by just swinging her arm(s) below her with the jib sheet in her teeth.

Laser's are a blast, they are fast as can be and turn on a dime.


A Star is a complicated boat, everything is adjustable. Or as we like to say, there are a lot of strings to pull. But a lot of serious racers go through them on their way up. With a crew you learn about that side, and they allow you to get used to the even cooler rigs the larger guys have. They don't have spinnikers sadly, which I just don't understand. So when you get on a real boat and they yell "blow the guy" your kind of lost. You need a lift to sail one, since they are a keel boat.

Looks like fun but if I were going that small then it would have to be faster! If you are going to get wet, it might as well fly. Like a used Hobie 18.... Yeehaa! RT
