Welfare Ain't What It Used To Be

Sharon Jasper has been victimized. Sharon Jasper has been rabidly wronged. She has become a Section 8 carcass-the victim of ever changing public housing policies.

Sharon Jasper has spent 57 or her 58 years dedicated to one cause and one cause only, and has nothing to show for her dedicated servitude. She has lived in Section 8 housing all but 1 of her 58 years. It was a legacy passed down from her parents who moved into Section 8 housing in 1949 when she was six months old. She has passed the legacy down to her children, but fears they may have to get jobs to pay for the utilities and deposits. She laments about her one year hiatus from the comfort of her Section 8 nirvana, ' I tried it for a year..you know, working and all. It's not anything I would want to go through again, or wish on anyo ne in my family, but I am damn proud of that year.'

Sharon was moved out of her St. Bernard housing project after hurricane Katrina and into a new, yet albeit, substandard quarterage. As can be noted from the above photo of her new Section 8 home, it is repugnant and not suitable for someone of Sharon Jasper's seniority status in the system. 'Don't be fooled by them hardwood floors,' says Sharon. 'They told me they were putting in scraped wood floors cause it was more expensive and elegant, but I am not a fool-that was just a way to make me take scratched up wood because I am black. The 60 inch HD TV? It may look nice but it is not a plasma. It's not a plasma because I'm black. Now they want me to pay a deposit and utilities on this dump.' 'Do you know why?'

She has held her tongue in silence through the years of abuse by the system, but it came to a head at the New Orlean's city council meeting where discussions were under way about the tearing down of the St. Bernard projects. When a near riotous exchange between groups opposing the tearing down of St. Bernard and groups wanting the dilapidated buildings torn down and newer ones built, Sharon unleashed verbal hell with her once silenced tongue. The object of her oratory prowess was an acquiescent poor white boy in attendance. The context of her scathing rebuke was, 'Just because you pay for my house, my car, my big screen and my food, I will not be treated like a slave!' and 'Back up and Shut up! Shut up, white boy! Shut up, white boy!'

Recapping from the mental log of the city council minutes in her head, Sharon repines, 'Our families have been displaced all over the United States. They are being forced to commit crimes in cities they are unfamiliar with. It is a very uncomfortable situation for them. Bring them back, then let's talk about redevelopment.'

Sharon directs the reporter's attention across the street to Duncan Plaza where homeless people are living in tents and states that, 'I might do better out there with one of these tents.' She further lamented her sentiments about her situation,' I might be poor, but I don't have to live poor.

Well if she's been so displaced, how about someone just give this waste of space a plane ticket to whatever country she chooses, as long as it's not this one.

Oh yeah thats section 8. If I were president section 8 would be the first program I changed.

I have been in many section 8 rentals, they never work, work oh no thats a foul idea. They usualy have monster TV's, and talk on the phone all day.

Oh I love this:

"I'm tired of the slum landlords, and I'm tired of the slum houses," she said.

Pointing across the street to an encampment of homeless people at Duncan Plaza, Jasper said, "I might do better out here with one of these tents."

Then get a job and pay your own way like everyone else, you worthless leach.

Is that for real?

If it is, I need to start being a poor person in New Orleans. That tv is way bigger than mine, and it looks like the apartment is quite a bit nicer too. I pay $525 a month for my run-down POS 1-bedroom. Location is pretty good though.

Its not just NO, its all over. Here in Long Island my wife and I actually talked to a woman who lived in the projects near us and she didn't want to take a new job offer. The reason? Well she was afraid that if she earned more they would take more money from her I wanted to grab her by the neck and yell "Thats the DEAL you idiot!!". I wasn't about to explain Math to this prick.

Its past on from generation to generation. Her mother lived there and she is too and when her daughter grows up she'll do the same despite the great educational opportunities of our nationally recognized local high school Its freaking unbelievable and its not just blacks, for example our local housing has others too. From my town house I can see the parking lot of the local housing from my top floor and I swear they have nicer cars than I do! Its enough to drive a man Republican

Imagine a whole building full of section 8. You gotta be pretty cold to be a section 8 landlord. At least someone benefits from these giveaways. Slumlords and carpet cleaners.

I would NEVER rent to a section 8. And if you owned a building full of them, good luck getting your money.

Actualy its the opposite. You get your checks from the state so you will get your money. The problems come from other sources, firstly the state sets the rent, they need to inspect the units which is a mixed bag. Also some of the people themselves are worse then animals.

This is pretty typical for a Section 8 rental. They are all not this bad, but I want to shower after going in most of them.

Thats why I'm a Republican, I want to throw them all out on their butts and build pretty buildings where they currantly live. I beleive living in the streets to be a strong motivator to work. Its amazing what a cold night and hungry stomich can do for motivation!

I don't really know much about it but aren't payments reduced by whatever amount you make if you get a job?

See, that makes it a penalty to work since you can't work without spending money for food fuel and so forth.

So the system penalizes folks for working.

Unintended consequences can be killers.

Some section 8's the tenant has to pay some of the cost, I believe up to 30% based on income. So you get part of the rent from the Gov. and the rest of the balance from the tenant Thats just asking for trouble if you are the landlord. Most of them don't even bother paying their share.

Get this, if the tenant destroys the apartment you can not collect for damages from the government and good luck getting it from the tenant, BUT if you try to evict the tenant the government will hire an attorney at no cost to the tenant. Lovely!
