I can't think of how people would confuse the name, aside of mistaking a N for the M maybe?

Back in 1992 when my dad remarried, my step-mother didn't want to give up her maiden name (she had also kept it though her first marriage), so they came to a compromise. They both changed their names- to a hyphenated version of both. Hers-His. I wasn't then and still am not wild about it now. It also confuses people when they hear the kids names- they wonder why they both have "Waters" for a middle name... Plus now my dad and I don't have the same name anymore He was #4 and I was #5 in line down the paternal side of the family with the same name.

Some names by themselves can be rather innocuous. However, combined with others, the results can be ...umm...interesting.

I like Hattie's idea. I knew an Architect who used the name Zermack and Associates. His actual name was Zrmack. I may not have it right, it was nearly 30 years ago. The point is he used a slightly different name for his business. I never asked why. It may have been because most americans would spell it that way or for liability reasons.

The most important thing is your relationship with your son. If he wants to do this respect the decision. He may live to regret it and change back but in the end he is your son and you love him, not his name.

If you are feeling really hurt about it try not to show it too much, but you might just say there are alternatives that he can consider. Maybe you can get him to wait a month or so and think over the options.

My oldest daughter was raised more by her mother after we split up. When she turned 18, she changed her last name to her step father's name and didn't bother to inform me. I attended her college graduation and found out when they called her new name for her to accept her diploma. I got up and went home, but never made any more deal about it. She is married now and so has her husband's last name and no longer has a working relationship with her mother (at her crazy mother's choice). We have a better relationship than ever.

Holding back is good with kids who make jestures sometimes looking for a reaction... maybe, but not realizing how hurtful it is.

The relationship is much more important than the name.
