mitsubishi montero, 1986 information

anybody know about these little beasts?

My favorite machinist told me about one that is available that needs motor work. I am wondering if it is robust enough to hang a plow on and use in place of my trusty scout?

Do they have a frame?

Are they any where near as rugged as a scout? (not likely).

Rugged as a scout? depends, I would rather have a Montero in almost any situation I have drivin them from sea to shining sea and damn near from pole to pole, if you take away the bells and whistles that are found on the American version in its class its probably one of the toughest vehicles in the world.

For plowing, thats a toughy because the basic pedegree for a plow truck is a strong as hell frame and good heater/defogger.....the defogger on the Montero sucks.

My friend had one in the islands where most of the "roads" are pot hole filled dirt paths. It did well.

Where do you find parts for a 22-year-old Mitsu? Nice vehicles, though. Dodge used to sell the two-door in the late-80's as the Raider.

They used to be no frills true blue vehicles with excellent reliability and true off road capability. Sadly the new one has gone the way of the other mall cruisers with unibody construction and plenty of bells and whistles. In India they sell both the latest Montero diesel as well as the older IDI Pajero which retains all the attributes of the older Montero.

So does the 87 have a frame or not?

I think I need something to hang the plow on.

I love the 2 door version/Dodge Raider. Wish they still made them.

Thank you. I will go have a look at it now.

I also just checked autotrader to see what they look like. Pretty tall and narrow. Looks like a good scout substitute. My first criteria is fitting on my sidewalk between my building and the trees in the edge of the sidewalk. I will take my tape measure along and get the width. The two door version looks better for my purposes. I found one for sale with a vw diesel in it.

Any other comments are welcome.

Before buying it, make sure to take it off road and go through the 4WD cycle with low and high couple of times. Also keep your ears open for the tell tale clunk. If you hear it, you can negotiate for a lower price. Fixing them is not expensive but that means the T case or diff has to come down.

When does it clunk?

Usually when cycling through 4WD and releasing the clutch.

I sure saw a lot of Mitsubishi Montero's running around Japan when I lived there in the late 80's / early 90's. Most of them had diesel engines.

Was it a Mitsubishi Montero that plowed through a shopping mall in Jackie Chan's First Strike? That was a cool scene.

I like them.
