Like most of you out there, I am a member of many different internet groups. As I get older and more paranoid, I realize that I don't want ANY personal information about me on the internet.

Now I realize that a sophisticated hacker is going to get into my computer no matter what I do, but I still want to make an effort.

What I am specifically asking is about when you sign up to groups and they want birth dates, zip codes and such. What do you do. And passwords, my God, am drowning in passwords. I want different passwords for banking information and for something like yahoo H gauge model railway group. Some places let you chose, some don't. What a mess.

Use symbols numbers and a word not associated with you but something you can easily remember..

a good one would be mercede$300 if you have to change it monthly replace the digits with the current month.

Just do like I do. Use your initials and your birthdate. Uh oh! . . . .

Yah, right...when I need it, I WANT IT NEAR ME!!!!

Here's what I've been able to do...I put the user name (UN) and the password (PW) in my cell phone under EDOC1, EDOC2, EDOC(N+1) with some "cryptic" identifier to remind me what it's for. (Cryptic for someone who finds my phone, if I'm clumsy enough to lose it... )

Door-enterance Security Codes, SS#s, you name it...your cell phone is attached to your butt most of the time...so use it for something other than blocking your hearing/mind when you're driving!

For passwords which require frequent changing, I use common words that I can remember, but in an obscure foreign language, followed by a sequence of numbers which I can convert into the month. Thus if I forget a password, I can easily reconstruct it from memory, yet nothing is written down.

I was at a security seminar this week. Aside from the paranoia that they try to instill in you, there were some interesting facts:

- 83% of the US population can be identified simply by birthdate, gender, and zip code.

- Computer hacking is safer and more lucrative than trading illegal drugs. There is a very strong incentive for people to do bad things.

- The presenters recommended not signing up for any kind of automated deductions from your bank account(s), since there are no assurances that those systems have adequate security. Although banks usually make good on stolen or breached accounts, pilfered funds have been traced to the middle east.
