Moses high on drugs!

Moses was high on drugs: Israeli researcher

JERUSALEM (AFP) — High on Mount Sinai, Moses was on psychedelic drugs when he heard God deliver the Ten Commandments, an Israeli researcher claimed in a study published this week.
Such mind-altering substances formed an integral part of the religious rites of Israelites in biblical times, Benny Shanon, a professor of cognitive psychology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem wrote in the Time and Mind journal of philosophy.

"As far Moses on Mount Sinai is concerned, it was either a supernatural cosmic event, which I don't believe, or a legend, which I don't believe either, or finally, and this is very probable, an event that joined Moses and the people of Israel under the effect of narcotics," Shanon told Israeli public radio on Tuesday.
Moses was probably also on drugs when he saw the "burning bush," suggested Shanon, who said he himself has dabbled with such substances.

"The Bible says people see sounds, and that is a clasic phenomenon," he said citing the example of religious ceremonies in the Amazon in which drugs are used that induce people to "see music."

He mentioned his own experience when he used ayahuasca, a powerful psychotropic plant, during a religious ceremony in Brazil's Amazon forest in 1991. "I experienced visions that had spiritual-religious connotations," Shanon said.

He said the psychedelic effects of ayahuasca were comparable to those produced by concoctions based on bark of the acacia tree, that is frequently mentioned in the Bible.

And this claim is based on the forensic results of Moses' autopsy?

My Mom used to say the same thing ...

Lots of trouble ... just like Martin Luther caused lots of trouble to the Catholic Church.

One would want to understand, that Pilgrim Fathers, who came to "The New World" were at large motivated in their quest to realize and pratice freedom of religion, by the unraveling activities and results of Luther's single handed work. Spiritually and intellectually.

It runs in the genes ...

Not far fetched at all. Huston Smith, a very well know professor of religion was one of the people studied in the early LSD tests done on faculty at Harvard and MIT. Smith has had lots of religious experiences and not too long ago wrote a book explaining how drugs are useful in religion. (Cleansing the windows of Perception??)
My wife is currently writing a paper on the physiological basis of religious experience. There's a psychologist named Persinger at Laurentian University in Sudbury Ontario that has designed an electromagnetic helmet which when activated on the head, causes a person to experience God. Very interesting stuff.

Anybody ever read the Gnostic Gospels? All those books that wern't put in the Bible. Which, by definition means "Collection of Stories". Also, since most everybody has the King James version, whenever you see the word "Heaven", you need to replace it with "Sky" because thats what was meant when it was translated in his court.

Given what we now know about the physiological basis of religious experience, under what conditions and for what reasons do people think that these brain events are more than brain events, such as experiences of God. In other words, since we know that epileptics are prone to religious experiences, that Persinger can create a God experience, that meditating monks surpress the part of the brain that draws a distinction between self and outside world, is there room for any transcendent explanations any more?
It used to be the case that demons were thought to cause mental disease. Now that we know the physiological causes, demons are not used as causal explanations any more. Is it going to be the same for God and Nirvana?
Have we crossed the divide and no longer have need for such transcendent hyptheses?

Didn't Mohamed do the same, had a vision while he was high? Actually getting high is not uncommon. In the Hindu mythology Shiva is always shown to be high. Most Indian ascetics do dope to attain so called enlightenment. Also among native Americans, the Shamans went into trance with the aid of Peyote.

How about a formerly-saved Matt?

It's a nice story, but completely speculation. I think there's an underlying assumption here, that Moses actually existed as documented.

I surprised most religious people aren't high all the time. You'd have to be to believe some of the stories the bible tries to pass off as truth.
