Funny Movies for Young Teens

I'm trying to show my 12 yo that movies can be good even if no violence, sex, drugs or bad language.

We just watched "The Great Race" and "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad Mad, World".

Both, he said, were "peeing in your pants" funny.

Please - any other suggestions?

The Great Race is a top-ten movie for me. Natalie Wood exudes sex though...but I suppose it's a little different than today's standards. I love the pie/bakery scene and the fencing scene. Maaaax!

Suppose the Sound of Music or Rodgers and Hammerstein stuff is too sappy for a 12 yr. old boy? I have 3 daughters so I'm jaded.

How about Young Einstein? I may get flamed for that one....but that movie kills me. Pretty innocent, IIRC too.

Or Hudsucker Proxy? That one might be too dark...and I can't remember what that one was rated.....but it's a cool flick.

"Goldrush" and "Modern Times" starring Charlie Chaplin are great. In fact most if his stuff is great. Later when he starts the "talkies" he gets deeper, more somber, and more political. I guess that's what happens when you get chased away from your home country.

At that age I liked these fairly wholesome movies. I was also into blood and guts horror movies and special effects makeup (Fangoria and Cinemagic).

Dr. Doolittle (1967)

20000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954)

Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959)

Around the World in Eighty Days (1956)

Oooh, those are good ones, I haven't seen those in ages.

What, do you have stock in Jules Verne, Inc. or something?

LOL. I was into the adventure movies. I also liked Fantastic Voyage, The Island of Dr. Murrow, Robinson Crusoe, Swiss Family Robinson, Gulliver's Travels. They all have the same quality.

Westerns?

"Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid"?

"True Grit"?

True, there's a bit of violence in those, but at least it's not gory and the camera doesn't linger on it lovingly.

There's also "The Cheyenne Social Club," with James Stewart as a cowboy who inherits a brothel in Wyoming, and Henry Fonda as his buddy. It's very funny but not at all dirty, as I recall from seeing it at age 14-15.

Try The Princess Bride. Lots of adventure and funny stuff. Singing in the Rain is also funny. Just don't mention that it's a musical.

Science Fiction?

Try George Pal's 1960 "Time Machine," with Rod Taylor, or the 1956 "Forbidden Planet," with Leslie Nielsen and Anne Francis.

They both have that "sense of wonder" quality that written SF shoots for and that the movies so rarely manage. And you can have fun comparing and contrasting "Forbidden Planet" and "Star Trek."

My daughter (and her schoolmates) have been reading the book...apparently, the movie is pretty true to the book.

She nor my wife ever saw the movie, so I bought the DVD, which recently happened to be available on sale. They BOTH loved it...especially the "Maiwwage" scene!

My daughter and I have our movie-bonding time watching the "Kill Bill" series, though...

I hooked my kids on the Bob Hope Bing Crosby road movies...

Every Christmas we all sit down to "It's a Wonderful Life", "Holiday Inn", and "White Christmas"

They balked at the B&W movies at first then got hooked...

Any of the Japanese monster movies worked when I was 12.. Go Mothra!
A list:
"Tucker, the man and his dream",
the "Indiana Jones" movies
any of the old "Flash Gordon" type serials...
"Bringing up baby" Gotta love Katherine Hepburn! anything with her and Spencer Tracy is great.
the "Thin Man"series
"Casablanca"
"Key Largo"
"The Maltese Falcon"
Any Jimmy Stewart western!
and basically anything on Turner Classics...

Not comedies, but --

How about "The High and the Mighty," with John Wayne, Claire Trevor, and Robert Stack? Very exciting. Or "The Crowded Sky," with Dana Andrews?

Elements of both of these were parodied, I think, in "Airplane!", so if he's seen that, he might appreciate these.
