Are they integrated or do they share a reservoir? If there's a separate brake master and clutch master as there must be, they aren't really integrated. They just share a common failure point.

Ah. I just recall an old MGB that a friend of mine once owned. After the car sat for awhile, you had to pump the clutch pedal a few times to prompt disengagement. I had always assumed a hydraulic issue was the basis for this drill.

That's what I meant the VW has, common reservoir. But, designed (as I'm sure the Toyota is) so if there is a leak in the clutch system, it will not drain the brake fluid out.

Well it turns out the springs on the clutch plate were pretty much disintegrated.

Got it all fixed now. thanks for all the help.
