Why worry about an arms race between pirates and non-pirates? Say the pirates have RPG's and automatic weapons of some sort. Mount a couple of a .50 MG's fore and aft. End of problem. Until the pirate responds with a 20 mm. So okay, non-pirate gets a couple of Javelins. Now what, pirate?

Since commerce is affected I am seriously surprised that a private navy has not been hired to keep the waters straight, I bet an enterprising person could make some $$$ by scoring that contract.

I've always felt that there were very few problems a belt fed machine gun wouldn't cure.

Ship mounted .50 caliber guns can be easily installed, heavily armored and given the size of most ships, practically unlimited in ammo supply. Pirates may show up with RPG's or even 20mm but it would seem most pirates are not particularly well equipped nor do they like facing serious resistance.

A quad 50 mount on the bow, another at the stern and one each amidships would allow at least 2 interlocking fields of fire in any direction and 3 to the sides. 8 to 12 .50 cals hammering away at a threatening vessel, their boarding party, etc. would make things very difficult for pirates.

That would easily solve the problem in short order, but no one will do it- it's not PC.

That was what I was sorta thinking. The cruise lines can afford way better tech and can float much heavier systems.

Any no-talent trash attacking my multi gazillion dollar vessel in the open waters is cordially invited to visit the ocean depths.

One thing that gets me is they way pirates can apparently sneak up on a vessel and be ready to board before they're even noticed.

I mean, if a Lexus can have a device that tells you you're about to back into a tree, couldn't a $100 million vessel have radar sensors and cameras mounted every 20 feet or so, scanning the near horizon?
