Only plus side to owning one is the fact that damn near every club has had one. Theres plenty of other mixer around with nicer faders and a better S/N ratio.

...and you can tell when a speaker's 180 out-of-phase (reversed polarity) JUST by the fact that'll it "cancel out" and wont be to loud at all (compared to the speakers wired in "Proper Phase")

If by "loud" you mean "reduced bass response", then that is correct. Unless the drivers in the speaker cabinet are extremely well-made, most mids and tweeters are a bit too sloppy to allow the ear to detect an "out of phase" condition.

The bass frequencies are slow enough however that the out-of-phase condition manifests itself aurally as a lack of bass.

Mp3's sound awful, even though most current releases are mixed to optomise that format. I say this with a harddrive w 70 gigs of music. Vinyl has a much rounder, (everybody uses the term 'warmer) lush sound. The low end is solid without being all boomy.

Having one's music collection accessible on a harddrive is a real convenience, however.

As far as being 'rare' or 'valuable', most major releases are not hard to locate on vinyl.

I have a few thousand LPs (2-3K I guess) left. I sold several off last year, and may "purge" the collection again soon. I just don't get to listen as much as I used to. Anytime I see a decent turntable at a pawn shop, thrift store, or garage sale, I pick it up.

The key to acceptable MP3's let alone any digital format is sampling-rate.

MP3 is also codec dependant than anything else, the codec used with the proper settings determines the sound quality of files. Using LAME with r3 mix presets yields 60% of CD quality with moderately large files.

My Mrs. and I have maybe a couple of hundred vinyl lps. From Tajma Hall to The Association with the Beatles and Beach Boys thrown in for good measure. I haven't listened to any of them for at least 17 years though because when we moved to the new house I never set up the turntable.....I still have it though.

I also have about a hundred records from the thirties and forties that belonged to a young man who was killed in ww2 and his family just left them in the attic of our old house (along with the purple heart that he won poshumously). Kindof sad.

I can hear out of phase speakers right of the bat. I can also tell you which house has a TV on from the street listening to the picture tube whine.




Theres nothing like a properly setup turntable/amp for "true to studio" sound. On a lot of tracks you can hear whats going on in the background. Lenny Kravitz is a believer in tube amp/vinyl sounds as well.

I recently bought a turntable with a USB output to record some classical music. I made some recordings at 16-bit, some at 24-bit and most at 32-bit. I can definitely hear the difference between the 16- and 24-bit recordings but not so much between the 24- and 32-bit recordings. Either of the higher bit depth recordings are indistinguishable from the original. The 32-bit recordings are huge, but drive space is so inexpensive there is no reason to record at a lower bit depth.

I also replaced the needle that came with the turntable and bought a nicer one. The difference in overall sound quality due to the needle was pretty amazing. The guy that owns the store where I bought the needle said at the outset the difference is akin to where in a symphony hall you’re seated. A nicer needle gets you the equivalent of a seat closer to the orchestra. He was right.

Which is why the digital format has been so widely embraced...it leveled the playing field for consumers.

For the most part, you can listen to digitally-formatted music on pretty much ANY source, esoteric or mundane, with little discernable dirfference in sound quality.

We still have most of our vinyl, including the first 45 I ever bought, in the early 60's (99 cents was a lot of money for me in those days!) and a couple of Dual tt's to play them on. We also have wax . . . original Edison records with a wind-up player. You could get anything you wanted as long as it lasted only 2 minutes. Some of the stuff they recorded 100 years ago was very interesting.

Going all the way back to the beginning of this thread, I'm glad to read that there are a few young people who appreciate analog. Digital is nice for the manufacturer (easier/cheaper to make) and for the consumer (more portable) but the sound is pushed around so much that much of the reality is lost. Many people have never heard a good analog sound system; they don't realize they are missing something.
