What's your experience with selling things on CL?

I'm thinking of cleaning out my house and am wondering what will be the best way to go. Either Ebay or Craigslist. I'm leaning towards Craigslist since it seems more oriented to particular localities. I don't want to have to ship stuff and worry about getting paid, etc.

Any recommendations?

If your talking about your old photo equipment I'll just bet there is someone here in OD who would want it.

I'll be inventorying it tonight. If anybody here IS interested in well-maintained, professional photographic equipment, let me know, and I'll let you know what I have. As soon as I finish doing the rest of the woodwork in this house, there'll be a lot of woodworking equipment available, too.

I've sold a lot of stuff on CL lately, and it has been ok so far, but be prepared to be lowballed on everything. A few things I sold I got my asking price for, but that is also because I greatly discounted them from the current going price on said items. I also had a few of my listings flagged and removed for violating policy, but I am not sure what policy they were violating.

I sold my Blazer and my motorcycle using CL.

As long as you do the deal in person and get your cash on the spot, there are no problems.

I was contacted three times by people trying scams. One tip is to do a google search on the email address before replying. I saw the email addresses in question listed as being involved in scams.

That's exactly why I don't want to do anything long distance. I was looking at a BMW recently that was for sale and the fellow selling it said somebody offered him counterfeit cash for the car, but he detected it because he had one of the markers that will turn up counterfeit bills. I would have NEVER even have considered that! The guy with the car seemed a little suspicious to me in the first place. What's the world coming to?!

Any old Pentax stuff?

I have had good luck on craigslist. Only deal locally, no mailing stuff. Put like 10 or 20 bucks higher on the listing, and be prepared for lowballers.

Good pictures sell the item, as I have found.... And dont put a tel. number.... I got calls at midnight.

Just be prepared for the whole lowball thing.

Make sure you add words that people search for.... Like on the bottom of my ads, I throw in

Quote:
Keywords : Then list keywords

If it were a camera lens, I would throw in Camera lens nikon pentax, etc....

And, when you conduct a transaction, do it at like a gas station or starbacks, if it is reasonably sized... Its easy to find, does not give away your location... If its large, play it safe, and do business somewhere like in your garage..... I always have a friend with me when I buy or sell stuff.... for support, reference, and just security.

Have sold a lot of stuff on CL: my experience is that there's always a buyer. Sold all this Balcar stobe equipment in not working condition, I had it for free and sold it for 100 bucks. Got new wheels sold the old metal mercedes wheels for $150,-, they were standing in line.

The thing with photo equipment, if it's not digital it's worthless. Sold a beautiful
Canon Eos 1n in almost mint condition on CL for $75, nobody wanted it took two weeks to sell it. Some guy bought it for his daughter because a film camera was mandatory at here photo class, this camera was top of the line!

Maybe for photo equipment eBay is a better option.

I think there will always be a reasonable demand for high end film equipment, particularly the brands that have cult followings, like Leica, Nikon & Hasselblad. There are also certain period pieces that will remain in demand, like Rolleiflex TLRs, Olympus Pen F and even the Minox. Good glass will always have a place.

Digital hardware probably won't enjoy the same fate. Each generation of increased megapixel sensors doom the resale market at a much faster rate.

CL should get the Nobel Prize in economics for creating the "beer barter" economy.

I've sold a couple cars on there with good success. Just be prepared for some strange offers. One guy wanted to trade me weed for a 300SDL.
