I believe the shift interlock deal is Audi's fault. Supposedly, the shift levers would pop out of Park, engage a gear, and lurch. Not sure if somebody got injured or not. But ever since then, we have those interlocks.

No it was Ford's fault. They were famous for popping out of park and into reverse. See PaulC's post.

People did get hurt unfortunately.

I have a bunch of friends..... Many of their parents have nice cars, and are like my parents, so they can drive whatever car, as long as its not in use.

Speaking of that, my parents used to have an 86 Dodge Aries K-car (total POS). It tended to idle way high, which we never did figure out. One day, Dad went to the store to get a newspaper. Since the paper machine was out in front of the store, and there was no one else around, he left the k-car running (with the super high idle) and the driver's door open. As he was getting the paper, the car popped out of park and into reverse and comenced making backward circles of the parking lot. Dad chased after the car and tried to jump into the driver's seat, but he missed, and ended up getting run over. About that time, a woman (who was much younger and somewhat quicker than Dad) came along and got the car stopped. Dad spent a night in the hospital, but ended up being fine. The local paper did a story about it.

Ah, lead. Those were the good old days...

I was just thinking about these; I've disabled every single one of them(except the doesn't-start-while-in-gear) on all of my cars...It makes driving much more comfortable!

I'm just waiting for GM to integrate GMAC with On Star. Didn't make the last three loan payments? Don't be surprised if someone sends a signal via satellite that causes your Aveo to drift over to the shoulder with a dead engine.

I'd expect that rant from the old timers who cannot and/or will not learn new technology. Kinda of the same group that felt a horse was good enough and no need of a mechanical beast to move you around. Hell, if they got lonely enough the horse could also help them out. I have no issue with the 3rd grade teacher in my back seat telling me how to behave. In fact, I kinda enjoy her being there. I'm comfortable enough with electronics that I can either bypass them or know people who can bypass them. Kinda like having your 3rd grade teacher telling you to behave and then you rework her so she is giving you road head.

Tell that to the guy whose kid moved the gear shift out of park and the car rolled away. Don't tell me that after it happened since it was someone's kid and MY car that rolled. Good thing she paid for it all.

You can program it the way you like so what's the problem? Those who want it can program it to lock. Those who don't, can program it not to lock.

I think that is a liability issue.

I'd say it was finally time they learned how to put a cupholder that can hold something decently
