Couldn't they have clobbered him when he was outside? Maybe tempt him with a bunch of kids playing outside? Maybe one would fall down and can't get up?

I visited a Death and Dying class in our Social Science department this semester and a student in the class reported that he had recently been to the funeral Mass of a friend who committed suicide. The priest told everyone, including the family, his friend was going to hell for suicide.
Strikes me that the only one deserving of hell in that scenario was the priest.

X2. And they wonder why the numbers in the church are dwindling.

That is the attitude I was expecting. maybe that's why I was so (pleasantly) surprised. I'm amazed at how cruel and heartless some people can be, esprcially members of the clergy.

And there you see, why I expect crap from people and either am expectant or pleasantly surprised.

When you learn the simple less on of expecting the worst from people, you won't be surprised anymore. At least not in the unpleasant sense.
